Medication Spotlight

HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors How Statins Work Statins remain the primary pharmacological intervention for dyslipidemia. By inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, these medications reduce cholesterol production in the liver and increase LDL receptor expression. Clinical tip: While some statins require evening dosing, Atorvastatin and Rosuvastatin have long half-lives and can be administered at any time of day.

Providing telehealth care to patients with heart failure? Make sure you’re protecting your license.

Nurses must be licensed in the state where the patient is physically located at the time of care. One way to simplify multi-state practice is through the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which allows nurses to practice across participating states with one license.

Currently, 43 states are part of the compact—but not all. If your state is not participating, now is the time to get involved and advocate for change.

PEARLS OF PRACTICE | Dyslipidemia Management

Timing matters when managing lipid-lowering therapy (LLT).

According to the 2026 dyslipidemia guidelines:
• Check a lipid profile 4–12 weeks after starting or adjusting therapy
• Continue monitoring every 6–12 months to assess efficacy and adherence

Consistent follow-up isn’t just routine—it’s the compass that keeps therapy on course and outcomes moving in the right direction.

Medication Spotlight

Targeting Triglycerides: Managing Hypertriglyceridemia When Triglycerides (TG) reach severe levels (≥500 mg/dL), Fibrates such as Fenofibrate or Gemfibrozil are often utilized. These agents stimulate PPAR-alpha to increase lipolysis. Important safety note: Avoid combining Gemfibrozil with statins due to the increased risk of adverse muscle-related effects and drug interactions.
