🚩 URGENT: HEIGHTENED WILDFIRE RISK THIS WEEKEND

Mississippi, please stay alert! A combination of low humidity and high winds is predicted to create critical wildfire conditions across the state this weekend. Our current environment is particularly vulnerable due to:

🔥 Ongoing Dry Conditions: Soil moisture is low, making vegetation easy to ignite.
🔥Increased Fuel Loads: Debris and "dry fuel" from recent natural disasters (including the February winter storms) have created extra fodder for rapid fire spread.
🔥High Wind Gusts: Winds can carry embers up to half a mile, starting new "spot fires" far from the original source.

🚫 CURRENT BURN BANS
The following counties are under strictly enforced burn bans. No outdoor burning of any kind is permitted:
Alcorn, Hinds, Benton, Rankin, Marshall, & Tishomingo

Check regularly for updated burn bans here: https://bit.ly/2MZLIC0

We at Smith County Emergency Management are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our brothers from the Sylvarena Fire Department. The fire service is more than a job — it's a family and a brotherhood — and today we mourn alongside you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his fellow firefighters, and the entire Sylvarena Fire Department during this incredibly difficult time. His dedication to serving his community and standing beside his brothers in the fire service will never be forgotten.

From all of us at Smith County Emergency Management, please know we stand with you and grieve with you. Rest easy, brother. Your watch here is done - we'll take it from here. 🚒🖤🙏

Thursday night, our department hosted a training session on Naloxone (Narcan) and how to properly use it in the event of an opioid overdose.

Thank you to John of Mississippi Public Health Institute for such an engaging class and thank you to all our neighboring stations that participated with us! 👩‍🚒💪

This is part of a program to try to get more Narcan in the hands of people who might need it.

If you would like to learn about it or want to request your own narcan kit, head over to ODFree.org for more info!!!

🚨Heads up Mount Olive!🚨

The weather conditions today have our area under a Red Flag Warning. This means that due to strong winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels (grass, brush, leaf litter) even the smallest of flames can be a big danger.

Please refrain from burning ANYTHING until conditions are better! Thank you.

Keep an eye on the weather this evening and into early tomorrow morning!
