There are so many factors to consider—even when it comes to bottle-feeding your baby! Here are a few important points we often discuss in clinic:

Feed first, then lay baby down without the bottle. Allowing babies to drink formula throughout the night can lead to issues like cavities.

Avoid "propping" the bottle, especially in young infants. This practice is linked to risks such as choking and ear infections.

Transition off the bottle around 12 months. We know this can be a tough change, but you've got this—and we’re here to help!

Sterilize bottles daily. You can use a dishwasher (if it has a sterilizing setting), boil them, or use microwave-specific sterilizer bags.

{Meredith here again} Can we talk about something I use in my own home and teach to parents all the time? It's called the Division of Responsibility when it comes to your child's Activity. This ALSO comes to us from the Ellyn Satter institute (https://www.ellynsatterinstitute.org/). The parent's side of the tennis court is to provide structure and safe opportunities for activity. The child's responsibility is "if, how much, and whether" they participate in movement. For example: I (the parent) will take my children to the park for one hour and they will decide how to play at the park. I (the parent) will organize a family walk, the child gets to chose whether than run, walk, skip, or bounce a basketball during the walk.

{Meredith here} Can we talk about something I use in my own home and teach to parents all the time.? It's called the Division of Responsibility when it comes to your child's nutrition. This comes to us from the Ellyn Satter institute (https://www.ellynsatterinstitute.org/). The parent's side of the tennis court is the what, when, where of meals and snacks. The child's responsibility is "if" and "how much." No alternatives, no fighting, just everyone staying on their side of the tennis court. Check out Ellyn Satter's website for amazing tips on the logic behind the "Division of Responsibility" and let me know if it worked for your family.
