This has been something I have wanted to do for a while now. WIC is helpful but I feel like pregnant mamas need more protein than what WIC gives them. Then the shutdown happened and SNAP benefits were threatened and I mentioned my thoughts to Midwife Megan Loewen . Count on her to get the ball rolling💜
We have a shelf set up, some initial donations in stock and we can make room for more. Also, although our little shelf is meant to help support our clients, I also plan to make a donation from my business to a local food pantry to also help the community at large. We truly are .

We are actually in an area with poorer outcomes, however, I can’t honestly say that our services are accessible to everyone. Yes, we take Medicaid, and that helps, but if I charged everyone Medicaid rates for my services, I would soon be out of business. Or trying to do twice as many births each month which also isn’t sustainable.

Here are two lawyers laying out the reasons and results of systemic inequality between midwives and the rest of the medical system.
"Inequality between medicine and midwifery is perpetuated in health policies, practice, law and economics..."

My favorite insurance response so far for a client with a history of two previous CS (and multiple VBACs):
“We won’t give pre-approval because she is low-risk and can go to one of our in-network providers in your area.”
(None of which would “allow” her to birth vaginally.)

Honestly, I think she could make a two week series out of all the things that make running a birth center so frustrating… Let’s follow along, shall we?

MAKE THIS MAKE SENSE Series Intro:

Birth Center Week is September 14-20, but honestly? The whole birth center industry needs a 'Make This Make Sense' intervention!

This week, I'm launching a series that tackles the absurdities keeping birth centers from thriving:

📹 Monday: Workforce Edition - Why can't we staff centers?
📹 Tuesday: Insurance Edition - Payer logic that defies logic
📹 Wednesday: Equity Edition - 'Accessible' care that's not accessible
📹 Thursday: Career Transition Edition - Why midwives won't make the switch
📹 Friday: Liability Edition - Better outcomes, higher premiums?...
📹 Weekend: The whole system recap

Every day, I'm asking the questions everyone's thinking but afraid to say out loud...

Because celebrating birth centers is great. Fixing the broken systems around them? That's better.

Follow along if you're ready for some uncomfortable truths and real solutions.

I let my students steal from me (consents, documents, etc) when they start their own practice. That comes with the understanding that I get to steal back when they post something good on social media. HT to Midwife Megan Loewen 😉
Stay hydrated out there!

Dehydration during pregnancy can sneak up quickly—especially this time of year! It can lead to headaches, fatigue, swelling, and even contractions. I’m hearing these compliants every day at this point.

Water is SO important, but sometimes we may need something more, especially if we’ve been outside. Even loading groceries is a work-out in this heat!

I found this scrolling through Pinterest (when I should have been napping). This looks like a great way to get some hydration and electrolytes in, and it sounds delicious too! Although, if you’re one of my clients, I’m sure you know by now I’m a big fan of plain ole water with some pink salt in it too if you don’t have time to get fancy. 💦

Your body is working hard—give it the fuel it needs.

Fair Flowers Birth Services was my dream as a student midwife. I worked hard to make it a reality as a licensed midwife. The biggest part of that dream was the desire to provide women with outstanding, personalized, and informed care during their pregnancies and births. That desire has not, and neve...
