I grew up listening to my grandma tell stories of her mom, the towns midwife. Not only did she help women bring their babies earthside, she used many of the same techniques I've learned to use today to help labor progress as naturally and comfortably as possible. That’s one of the most beautiful things about birthwork. The knowledge is passed down from generation to generation. And then we learn more and add things to teach to those who come after us. It’s so incredibly special. Hearing my grandma tell her mom’s stories always fascinated me and I always knew I would be involved in birth work somehow. After my fifth baby was born, I decided I was ready and tackled doula school. And now, I’m SO excited to have begun my journey into midwifery. I’m currently enrolled in The Association of Texas Midwives Training Program and I’m so fortunate to be apprenticing with the two midwives who were with me at the birth of my last baby, Diane Dreier, LM CPM and Sarah Friberg, LM CPM. I am learning so much from them as well as the amazing midwives and apprentices and Seeds of Grace Birth Center in Longview, Texas.

"Birth is not neat and fast: It's gritty and primal. But it's nothing to fear. Unless you also think we ought to fear women crying when they are sad or laughing when they are happy...." Mayim Bialik

Having the privilege to witness the all encompassing power of birth and support so many families through their most life changing moments is one of greatest honors of my life. One day I imagine I’ll be an old long gray haired hippie midwife with grandchildren gathered around listening to stories of life and strength that could move mountains. And one day they’ll share the same stories with their kids. Because that’s the beauty of birth and midwifery. It isn’t just about a child being born. Of course that’s the most beautiful transformational miracle one can experience. But it’s also about hope. And resilience. And faith. And all the things everyone of us can use more of.
