🌟 Coordinator Spotlight: Mayra Torres – Vivian Fowler Elementary School
Mayra Torres has been part of the Communities In Schools of Northeast Texas family for nearly 15 years. She began her journey as a receptionist in 2010 and transitioned into her role as a CIS Coordinator in 2014 after earning her degree.
For Mayra, Fowler Elementary feels like home—because it is. Her passion for this work runs deep and personal. “I was a teenage single mom, and sometimes the weight of doing it all alone felt heavier than I could bear. I love being able to help families find resources and letting students know they have someone in their corner.”
Mayra's goal is to help students succeed in school by meeting their everyday needs. One moment she’ll never forget came this past year:
“With help from the MT Pleasant Texas Lions Club and Mt.Pleasant Eye Care Center, PA Brian K. Nichols OD, we were able to get a first-grade student her first pair of glasses. When she put them on, she looked around the room in awe and shouted, ‘Wow, I can see!’ She was almost in tears—and so was I.”
