Diabetic Alert Dogs - The Borderland Way is not accepting new applications at this time due to extremely high volume and wait list.

Addionally, we are advocating for state and Federal laws to protect legitimate service dog teams with the increasing number of "fake" service dogs who put our program dogs at risk. We are evaluating the next steps for our program and how to protect our dogs.

One of our Service Dog teams was discriminated against today at a restaurant. Please remember this is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is Federal Law, and should be reported to the Department of Justice. Please see below regarding the steps to filing an official complaint:

THIS....!!!

Insulin is the same as needing oxygen to breathe. People with don’t make insulin on their own and insulin is needed for their cells to breathe. Lack of insulin is deadly and it slowly kills the organs in the body over time or can quickly cause DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) and can lead to death. No one in need of lifesaving insulin should ever go without due to rising high costs. Insulin should be affordable and accessible to all.

Scent detection candidates should have a long broad nose, and be bred to work along side people.
Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and Standard Poodles are highly recommended.
In addition, some Spaniels as well as Weimaraners, Pointers and some sporting dogs could be good candidates.
We do not recommend "Pit Bulls", Terriers, Hounds, Herding dogs, or lap dogs.
Dogs between 12 weeks - 2 years are welcome to be evaulated for our program.

American Airlines bans specific ESAs... it’s about time! As cute as they are, no more hedgehogs or baby goats🤣

Under the new rules, which go into effect July 1, American is adding amphibians, goats, hedgehogs, insects, nonhousehold birds and animals with tusks, horns or hooves to the list of those that can’t fly as service or support animals.

American Airlines is banning hoofed, horned, creepy and crawly creatures from flying as emotional support animals, joining rival airlines in tightening rules.

Teach your dog to become an advocate for your health —
a Diabetic Alert Dog, trained The Borderland Way.

Dogs over the age of 12 months will be required to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test before beginning classes.
Puppies 12 weeks and older will be evaluated and considered based on their temperament, etc. They will be required to pass the AKC CGC test as well, prior to program graduation.

Every day people are misrepresenting their pets as Service Dogs or Service Dogs in Training only to hurt legitimate Service Dog teams. It is now illegal in 19 states with several more pending legislation.

Legitimate handlers and their, often life saving, Service Dogs are negatively impacted every time a person puts a vest on their pet and takes it in public. Even though a Service Dog is not defined by a vest, the association between the two is a strong public perception. So a pet in a vest is a very dangerous thing for a legitimate Service Dog team.

The service dog community will continue to advocate for laws to stop this fraudulent act of misrepresenting pets as Service Dogs and protect disabled handlers and their Service Dogs.
