🐾 Understanding Torn CCL: What You Need to Know 🐾

Did you know that torn CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) is one of the most common causes of lameness in dogs? This crucial ligament helps stabilize the knee joint, and when it’s injured, it can cause pain and mobility issues for your furry friend. It is not specific to dogs, cat's can also suffer from CCL tears!

🔍 What is CCL? The CCL connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone) in the knee. When torn, the knee can lose stability, making it hard for your pet to walk, run, or jump.

⚠️ Signs of a Torn CCL:

Limping or favoring one leg

Difficulty getting up or walking

Swelling or heat around the knee

Pain when touched in the knee area

Decreased activity or reluctance to move

💡 Causes of CCL Injury:

Trauma: Sudden accidents, like falls or car accidents as well as quick movements can cause a tear.

Chronic Stress: Gradual wear and tear from excessive activity or obesity.

Age & Genetics can also play a part!

🏥 What Can You Do?

Vet Visit: If you suspect a torn CCL, consult your vet for a diagnosis.

Treatment Options: Depending on the severity, treatment may range from rest to surgery. Physical rehabilitation is typically recommended in both scenarios!

Post-Surgery Care: After surgery, your pet will need plenty of rest and rehabilitation to regain full mobility.

🔄 Prevention Tips:

Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on joints

Provide joint supplements to keep ligaments strong

Regular low-impact exercise to maintain muscle strength

👉 Don’t ignore limping! Early detection and proper treatment can make a huge difference in your dog’s recovery. 💕
