Larry Lee “Fuzz” Neff, 86, of Lockridge passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at his home surrounded by love.

Larry was born on August 16, 1938 in Wayland, Iowa, the son of Gerald and Mary (Stalder) Neff. He attended Wayland High School. Larry worked at many farms over the years, including a turkey farm, Boshart farm, Don Sheets farm and Mel Jaspering farm. Larry then went to work for Jefferson County as a county road grader for 30 years until his retirement.

He was previously married to Sharon (Layman) Barton and Ruth Ann (McDole) Gugel and later divorced. In 1979, he met the love of his life, Barbara Gerleman and they were united in marriage on December 12, 2008.

Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, mushroom hunting, tinkering with tractors, watching westerns and feeding the birds in the winter months. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and spent many, many Sundays playing cards and enjoying his other “family” at the Eagles Nest in Coppock.

Those thankful for sharing his life include his wife, Barbara, his children, Lynn Neff of Fairfield, Angie (Kenny) Kempf, of Wayland, Maryjo (Matt) Rich, of Washington, and Wendi Neff (Michael) Ulin, of Washington, his six grandchildren, Morgan (Nick) Kaufman, Mason (Haley) Rich, Makenna (Koltyn Niles) Rich, Amiah (Jeff Cox) Neff, Aidan Ulin and Alec Ulin, one great grandchild, Brewer Kaufman along with his honorary sons, Craig Kaufman and Dan Raymond.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, a brother. Rich Neff and by his mother and father-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Larry’s father passed away in 1944 when he was 6 years of age. Edith and Tom Lowry helped raise him with his mom and he considered them as his second set of parents.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant with Father Nick Adam officiating. Burial will follow in the Lockridge Cemetery. Those attending the service are asked to dress casual. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Murphy Funeral Home where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Lockridge First Responders or to Compassus Hospice in his memory.

Timothy Lee Johnson, 49, of Mount Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Tim was born on May 22, 1976 in Burlington, the son of Harry and Judy Elizabeth (Meyer) Johnson. He graduated from New London High School and went on to work for Wal-Mart and later for Hearth and Home Technologies of Mount Pleasant. Tim was united in marriage to Jacki Weber in 2004, and from this union Josie and Lucas were born. Tim enjoyed camping, riding motorcycles and working on cars. He was known as a hard worker.

Those thankful for sharing in his life include his children, Josie Johnson, of Bentonsport and Lucas Johnson, of Farmington, his parents, Harry and Judy Johnson, his grandmother, Maude Meyer, his brother, Rodney (Dawn) Johnson, a niece, Farah Johnson and his beloved dog, Maggie.

A celebration of Tim’s life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at East Lake Park 1722 Lexington Ave Mount Pleasant beginning at 1 p.m.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.

Karee Ann Johnson, 77, of Birmingham, Iowa passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Karee was born on August 17, 1947, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Eldon and Vera (Shaulis) Briden. She graduated from Keosauqua High School. Karee was united in marriage to Raymond Johnson on December 23, 1966, in Stockport. Raymond preceded her in death on February 21, 2016. Karee worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Fairfield Glove Factory for 20 years, and finished her working career at Hy-Vee in Fairfield. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, painting ceramics, watching game shows and westerns.

Those who are thankful for sharing in her life include her son, Phil (Angie) Johnson of Fort Madison.

Karee was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond and her daughter, Pamela Johnson-Conder.

A private family graveside service will be held at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, Iowa with words of comfort by Jeff Murphy. Memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warriors Foundation in her memory. Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant is caring for Karee and her family.

Allen Edmund Boecher, 64, of Hillsboro and formerly of Montrose passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Hillsboro.

Allen was born on May 5, 1961, in Fort Madison, the son of Ronald and Margaret (Daley) Boecher. He graduated from Fort Madison High School with the class of 1979. After his graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He worked at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison for several years. Allen enjoyed fishing, hunting and riding his motorcycle.

He is survived by his sister, Ronda (Randy) Stoneburner and four nieces and their families.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, LeRoy and Lottie Boecher and Allen and Thelma Daley.

Private family graveside services and burial will be held later in the Oakland Cemetery at Fort Madison. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.

Shirley Langel, 85, of Mount Pleasant passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the New London Specialty Care Center.

She was born on May 16, 1940, in LaRay, Missouri, the daughter of Paul and Edith (Henry) Calhoun. She attended school in Fairfield. In 1956, she was united in marriage to Jim Good and from this union three children were born, Eugene, Larry and Joyce. They later divorced. Shirley later married Jerry Langel; he preceded her in death in 2004.

Shirley worked at Heatilator for 31 years, and then at the Henry County Health Center and later at Park Place Elder Living Center in Mount Pleasant, retiring in 2020. Shirley loved her horses and in her younger years she enjoyed training them. Throughout the years she always enjoyed spending time with her close friends going to different places to eat and to the casino. Most of all spending time with her family and grandchildren was the highlight of her life.

Those thankful in sharing in her life include her children, Eugene (Michelle) Good of Calhoun City, Mississippi,
Larry Good of Mount Pleasant and Joyce Wixom of Brighton, 6 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 5 sisters, Donna Smart, Jackie Smart, Beverly Brobston, Luella Hagens and Janet McKenzie.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The family will be present until 4 p.m. that afternoon. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.

Genevieve M. “Gee Gee” Fetterman, 89, of Salem passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Henry County Health Center, in Mount Pleasant surrounded by her loving family.

Gee Gee was born on August 30, 1935, in Iowa City, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Cooper) Wesely. She was united in marriage to Nathan J. “Shorty” Fetterman on August 31, 1953, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant. They were married 68 years before he passed away on May 16, 2022. She worked at Metromail, FBG and the VanVorhies Haus, retiring at the age of 84.

Throughout her life she had many different hobbies, she helped on the family farm, gardening, was an excellent cook and made wedding cakes and mints for several weddings. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church of Mount Pleasant.

Those thankful in sharing in her life include her children, Becky Thornton, of Salem and Randy Fetterman of Oquauka, Illinois, her grandchildren, Brandon Fetterman, Megan (Jarod) Conrad, Matthew Fetterman and Tasha (Tommy) Thornton, her great grandchildren, Chayse, Lakota, Julian, Val and Rhaenyra, along with several nieces and nephews.

Gee Gee was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Shorty, her son-in-law, Jack Thornton, her brothers, Mike, Charlie, George, Paul, Frank Jr., “Joe”, and John along with five sisters, Priscilla, Irma Jean, Bertha, Dorothy and Jane.

Friends may call on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, from 2 until 7 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant. The family will not be present. Memorials may be directed to the Salem Fire and Rescue Association or to the Faith Lutheran Church in her memory. According to her wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.

Reed Herold Jones, 96, of Mount Pleasant, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025, at his home.

Reed was born on July 20, 1928, in Packwood, Iowa the son of Raymond “Buck” and Georgia Jones. After high school Reed enlisted in the United States Army on September 5, 1946. He was stationed in Japan during World War II. He was honorably discharged on June 25, 1949. Reed was united in marriage to Bonnie L. Sullivan on July 14, 1956, in Macomb, Illinois. Reed worked for Contel Telephone for 35 years. After his retirement he and Bonnie enjoyed traveling. He was an avid Ham Radio operator. Reed was a member of the Faith Christian Outreach Church in Mount Pleasant.

Those thankful for sharing in his life include his wife, Bonnie of 68 years, his children, Jim (Jeri) Jones of Strafford, Missouri and Scott Jones, of Mount Pleasant, his grandchildren, Jennifer (Darwin) Johnson of Burlington, Tony (Brandy) Jones, of Lockridge, Graham (Jenni) Jones of Clive, Rachel Jones, of Des Moines, Jessica Bertram, of Aplington, Iowa, Greg (Jenna) Jones of Wellsburg, Iowa, Casey (Amber) Jones of Parkersburg, Iowa and Taylor (Jeremy) Reid of Fairfield, Iowa and 22 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sons, Mark Jones and Todd Jones.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The family will receive friends on Friday from 9:30 until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial with full Military Honors will be conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard at the Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant. A memorial has been established in his memory.

Karen Kay Mabeus, 67, of Mount Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at her home.

Karen was born on November 25, 1957, in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Howard Herman and Irma Edith (Kinney) Mabeus. Karen was a part of Hope Haven and Flex Services. She worked various jobs with Flex Services and enjoyed many activities. She always enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews with whom she had a special bond. Karen was a part of the Special Olympics, in the swimming team and also participated in a 4 H Club. Karen collected stuffed animals such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Indian dolls and was very talented at latch hook projects.

Those thankful in sharing her life include her sisters, Judy (Bill) Cash of Mount Pleasant, Marilyn (John) Coghlan of Panora, Iowa, her brother, Terry (Deb) Mabeus of Mount Pleasant and her sister-in-law, Martha Mabeus, of Mount Pleasant, her uncle, Larry Kinney of Minnesota, along with several nieces and nephews, great nieces, nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jerry Mabeus.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant with Father Ross Epping celebrating the mass. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Point Cemetery, rural Mount Pleasant. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant and at the church on Thursday from 9:30 until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to Flex Services, All God’s Creatures Shelter and to the Pleasant Point Cemetery.

David Richard Calhoun, 68, of rural Mount Pleasant passed away at his home on Saturday, May 31, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Dave was born on January 13, 1957, in Mount Pleasant, the first-born son of Victor R. and Marilyn (Mueller) Calhoun, Jr. He served his country in the Iowa National Guard, where he and his cousin and friend enlisted together. Dave was blessed to do what he loved. He had a passion and talent on an excavator and truly enjoyed those days. The only way to make the day better was to call one of his sons and have them working alongside him. He was an entrepreneur at heart and owned and operated Big Creek Contracting. He enjoyed any activity that kept him outdoors. At a very young age he would go with his father to learn the art of hunting and trapping and most of all spending time together. Dave and Cookie enjoyed being in the boat on the Skunk River fishing and had a passion for Oakland Mills and its history. The river was a place to spend time together and relax. They enjoyed taking their grandchildren out in the boat teaching them how to fish and sharing an appreciation of the outdoors.

The love of family was central to his upbringing, and he raised his children with that same heart and commitment. He had many things that he loved but nothing more than his family. When one would call for help, he was always there to lend a hand. He enjoyed the traditions of big family gatherings and loved being able to spend time together sharing stories and laughs. Dave was a great listener and made time for his nieces and nephews whom he loved and who loved him dearly. Dave was a Christian and lived his life by Matthew 25:36 “I needed clothes, and you clothed me, I was sick, and you looked after me…..” He lived his life never turning his back on someone in need, giving his time, talent and treasure. He loved his kids and would never turn down a child with a cause. Dave never knew a stranger and always treated everyone he met with compassion and respect.

Those thankful in sharing in his life include his companion of 24 years, Cookie and his children, Ben (Sheri) Calhoun and Chad (Andrea) Calhoun, his grandchildren, Alex, Zach, Grace, Austin, Addie and Drew, his mother, Marilyn Calhoun, his brothers, Dale (Becky) Calhoun and Joe Calhoun and his sister, Mary (Alan) Raymer, along with a host of nieces and nephews and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

Dave’s family will host a celebration of his life on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 1405 West Clay Street, Mount Pleasant beginning at 3:00 p.m. In case of inclement weather, it will be held at the Wright Pavilion on the Midwest Old Threshers grounds. A memorial has been established in his memory. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.

George Fredrick Septer, 83, of Salem passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Park Place Elder Living Center in Mount Pleasant.

George was born on July 26, 1941 in Salem, the son of Roy and Carlotta (Gumbo) Septer. He was united in marriage to Doris Hourihan on November 28, 1959, in Salem. George was a very caring, hardworking and generous person. He worked at the Fort Madison Correctional Facility for 30 years, owned and operated Subs and Suds in Burlington, and for 25 years owned and operated George’s Concessions.

Those thankful in sharing in his life include his wife of 65 years, Doris, of Salem, his children, Mike Septer, of Ottumwa and Lora (Charlie) Meierotto of Pilot Grove, his four grandchildren, Susan, George, Mitch and Trisha and his two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ralph Septer and Dale Septer, and one sister, Shirley Guzman.

A Celebration of George’s life will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be held at a later date in the Salem South Cemetery. According to his wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant. A memorial has been established in his memory.

George J. Ensminger, 88, of Rome, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

George was born on September 25, 1936, in Rome. He was the son of George and Gayle (Messer) Ensminger. He attended grade school in Rome and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in the Class of 1955. He then went on to attend Iowa Wesleyan College.

George was united in marriage to Donna Jean Scarff on June 15, 1956, in Trenton, Iowa. She preceded him in death on May 20, 2018. He worked as a union iron worker for 35 years with memberships in locals 97, 89 and 577. George was a proud farmer in the Rome community for over 55 years raising cattle, hogs, and planting many acres of row crops. George loved fishing in the Skunk River, where he became well known for catching impressive 50-pound flathead catfish. He took great pride in passing on his knowledge, teaching many young people the art and joy of fishing. George made a habit of frequently sharing his abundant catches with friends and neighbors at fish fries and get-togethers.

George was known for his sociable nature--his door was always open, and he always had a cold beer and a story for anyone who stopped by. He served on the Grant Cemetery Board for many years. Later in life, he found joy in spending time at the Rome Baptist Church, where he formed many meaningful friendships. Always by his side, George found great comfort in the companionship of his cherished dog, Jenny.

Those thankful for sharing in his life include his children: Dianna Lynn Ensminger (Butch Wellington) of Mt. Pleasant; Richard Allen Ensminger (Cindy) of Louisville, Tennessee; and Rachel Neis (Tim) of rural Mt. Pleasant. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Shane, Leah, Mallory, and Lillian; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Betty Ensminger; several nieces; a nephew; and a dear friend, Trudy Rodgers. He is also remembered by his treasured dog, Jenny.

George was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Donna, and two brothers, Robert and Richard Ensminger. His memory lives on in the hearts of all who shared in his life.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Rome Baptist Church, with Pastor Guy Sammons officiating. Burial will follow in the Grant Cemetery, rural Rome. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening. Memorials may be directed to the Rome Baptist Church or to the Grant Cemetery in his memory.

Thomas LaVerne Judd, 67, of Mount Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at his home.

Tom was born on October 3, 1957, in Mount Pleasant the son of LaVerne and Eva May (Humbert) Judd. Tom worked at the Henry County Health Center for a number of years and did lawn care and snow removal. He enjoyed going to Midwest Old Threshers and fishing on the Skunk River. Tom was a jokester and was always the life of the party. He was a loyal friend and was willing to help anyone he could.

Those thankful in sharing in his life include his sisters, Martha Messer and Nancy Landes, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, along with his many friends at Mapleleaf Apartments, including his dear friend, Pam Baldwin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Maxine Nichols and two brothers, William Judd and Robert Judd.

According to his wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant and no services are planned at this time.
