created Miss E, the SLP for educational content encouraging early developmental speech, language, cognitive, and social/emotional skills from a Christian Worldview***. My husband and I put together this first video and we would love to hear what you think. For fans of Ms. Rachel that would prefer a Christian worldview.
While screen time is definitely not a substitute for therapy, content like this can supplement skills practiced during therapy sessions. It would also give you an idea of what therapy would be like with me for kiddos from 0-3 years of age.
***While the content of this video has explicitly Christian themes my professional/clinical services are presented in a neutral manner.
Feel free to share this video, like, and subscribe on youtube.

Hello everyone! I am expecting a sweet little baby boy to arrive in the next few days. Because of this, I will be taking the summer off for maternity leave. We will not be taking any new patients at this time, but plan to be back in August 2022. I hope everyone has a happy summer break and enjoys a little sunshine!!!!

Charts like these aren’t meant to send parents into a total panic!!! Only to give parents an idea of when we expect children to meet communication milestones. Remember, there is a range for normal. If a child doesn’t have their first word on the day of their first birthday this doesn’t necessarily mean there is cause for concern. If a child is not meeting milestones consistently and after a month or two without hitting benchmarks it is recommended that you talk to your pediatrician and consult with a speech-language pathologist. However, there are plenty of times I discuss a child’s function with their parents and determine the child is likely functioning within normal limits.

Key takeaway: If your child is consistently missing communication milestones and is behind more than 1-2 months in meeting a milestone it may be time to consult with a professional.

Saying “nana” for banana or “dah” for “dog” can be cute and even normal simplifications of speech for children who are learning to talk. But, at some point, our children grow up and we expect these cute speech patterns to go away. You might ask, what age should my child stop shortening their words or replacing the sounds in their words with other ones? Below is a chart that explains some of the names for these patterns of speech sound errors and the age at which a speech-language pathologist would expect the errors to stop occurring:

If you are the parent/guardian of a child who demonstrates some of these errors, your child may be appropriate for further evaluation by a speech-language pathologist. Feel free to reach out to us for more information.

I often get questions about little ones who are not yet imitating words. What can we do? This chart outlines the sequence of skills children develop before imitating words. Before we imitate words, we imitate sounds, and before we imitate sounds we imitate actions. These are building blocks for creating those words!

One great misconception about using sign language to improve communication is the fear that it will prevent verbal communication. But this is not the case. Research even suggests that teaching sign language along with speech may improve verbal communication beyond that of teaching speech alone.

People often tell me that they have difficulty understanding their child's speech. How much of that is normal for their age? Below is a chart helping to outline how much of a child's speech you would expect to understand (how intelligible it is) based on their age.

Familiar listeners would include people the child regularly comes into contact with family, close friends or other caretakers.

Unfamiliar listeners are people who may be hearing your child for the first time.

Every child is different and this should just be a guidepost. Reach out to me if you have further questions!
