Blue Lotus Essential Reads: March Edition πŸ€

Some books stay with you long after you've turned the last page. This book is definitely one of them!

Written by Viktor E. Frankl, this powerful read gently challenges how we think about hardship, trauma, and what it means to keep going when life feels impossible. Instead of focusing only on what is meant to break us, it invites us to consider an alternative perspective. To focus on what sustains us, or our sense of meaning, purpose, and even the smallest moments of hope.

For us in the counseling world, this book helped shift the conversation tremendously. It reminds us that while we don't always have control over what we go through, we do have the power to choose how we want to respond or approach a situation. Viktor Frankl shows that, in that space, there's room for growth, healing, and autonomy.

If you decide to pick it up, we'd love to hear what stands out to you ❀️. Let us know if you have any recommended reads! We'd love to hear about them.

As humans, one of the most freeing things that we can learn is: two things can be true at the same time. You can love someone and still need boundaries. You can be grateful for your life and still want things to change or acknowledge hurts. Most importantly, you can be healing and still have bad days. Clinically, this is called "Dialectical Thinking".

So often in society we can feel the pressure to pick one side of how we feel, as if emotions have to fit neatly into a single box. I'm sure you know as well as we do: being human is rarely that simple. Sometimes our experiences can hold both/and, not either/or.

Allowing ourselves space to hold multiple truths or emotions can soften our self-judgment and remind us that complexity is not a flaw, but simply a part of being an authentic human.

So here is your daily reminder, two things can be true.
- Sincerely, Sam πŸ’Ÿ

Enjoy some humor, from us to you, on this wonderful Wednesday! In the therapy space, there are different styles of how your therapist may show up in the room. The Tik Tok below depicts the "Relational Therapist". What's the difference?

The classic "blank slate therapist" you sometimes see perceived in movies, can look a bit like this:
Client: "I've had the absolute worst day at the amusement park..."
Therapist: [Maintains composure, maybe gives a thoughtful nod] "Hmm, and how did that experience make you feel?"

Relational therapy takes a different and unique approach, recently emerging in the field of mental health. This approach recognizes that healing often happens within connection, not outside of it. Instead of the therapist being a mostly silent observer, sitting across from you like a mysterious detective of some sort, the relational therapist shows up as a real and engaged human. This helps to build trust, offers authentic presence, and creates a space where connection supports and assists the growth. In addition to this, it can also offer what's known as a "corrective experience".

At Blue Lotus, we mainly practice relational therapy because the therapeutic relationship can be a powerful part of healing. It's known to make up 50%+ of the effectiveness of your treatment, no matter the modality the therapist utilizes (i.e. CBT, DBT, EMDR). So, yes, you'll still hear those thoughtful questions, but you'll also experience genuine engagement, collaboration, and a therapist who strives to walk alongside you in the process. We understand that growth doesn't always come from talking at a blank wall, but being truly heard, seen, and connected.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!πŸ€

"May the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends gathered below never fall out" -- An Irish Blessing

This beautiful message reminds us of the importance of safety, connection, and belonging. Having a place where we feel supported and surrounded by people who walk alongside us can make all the difference in life's journey. Today, we're wishing everyone a sense of warmth, community, and meaningful connection (with a little luck, of course πŸ˜‰).

May your day be filled with laughter, support, and true connection. πŸ’š

Here's our on this .

What have you done to take care of yourself lately? We love spending time with our loved ones, our pets, and really taking the time to make our comfy nests at home.

Taking care of yourself creates capacity for the week (and more) ahead. Make sure you're giving yourself the time that you need!

Previously, we discussed a skill where we pause to observe what our emotions and bodies are telling us. But what does that even mean? Good question, we'd love to tell you.

Emotional attunement: the practice of noticing and connecting with our internal emotional experience with curiosity instead of judgement. It means asking ourselves, "What am I feeling right now? What might this emotion be trying to tell me?"

Many of us were taught to analyze our thoughts to decipher what we're feeling, but not necessarily how to also listen to our bodies. Yet, they still are constantly trying to communicate with us. One way to deepen our own emotional attunement is through listening to our bodies, or the physical sensations that are connected to our emotions. Slow down enough to notice, from the top of your scalp to the tips of your toes. What do you feel?

Sometimes, what we're feeling isn't just one emotion, either. Emotions can combine and layer, creating more complex feelings for us to decipher. The photo below gives us an idea of how emotions can become their own onions, with lots of layers.

What's your emotional world been tell you, lately?

Let's discuss the Reactive Mindset vs. the Responsive Mindset

Actually, one of the most powerful things that we can shift in our emotional lives is being able to decipher (and implement) the difference between reacting and responding.

In the reactive mindset, our brain moves into autopilot, or those "knee-jerk" reactions. Emotions will surge, our nervous system goes into a protective mode, and we act quickly. Sometimes, even before thinking. This can look like snapping in frustration, shutting down in conflict, becoming defensive, or saying things that we later wish we could take back.

A responsive mindset, in contrast, involves a brief pause. This allows the space between the trigger and the action, where we gain the ability to notice our emotions, regulate our nervous system, and choose how we want to show up. This is where growth occurs.

Here's a simple exercise for the next time you're struggling with the reactive mindset:
1. Pause. Stop and simply observe what is happening.
2. Breathe. Take 3 belly breaths, making sure to slowly exhale.
3. Name the feeling you're experiencing.
4. Notice what's happening in your body. Where do you feel this emotion physically? Is your chest tight? Is your jaw clenched?
5. Choose your response. Ask yourself: "What response aligns with the person I want to be in this moment?"

This isn't about never reacting, it's about strengthening the ability to pause long enough to respond with intention, even in those tough moments.

Happy Monday, y'all!

We've seen a lot of requests for services lately, so we wanted to take this time to give some friendly reminders:
- Before beginning services, it's a good idea to check with your insurance carriers to see what is covered and ensure that we are in network!
- If your plan has an out-of-pocket deductible before insurance will begin to cover services, there is a high likelihood that your sessions with us will be out of pocket. We CAN provide super bills when needed!
- If we aren't in network with your insurance carrier, we do offer sliding scale fees!

We appreciate all of our client's and them keeping up with the chaos that is insurance in the mental health world! We promise, we enjoy it even less than you all do haha! Enjoy some humor on this long Monday.
