When using the wonderful FamilySearch program, don't forget there should be only one profile page for each person. If you discover there is a duplicate profile, a merge needs to be done. This can be a tricky process. Use the link below in Comments for a great video that walks you through this updated procedure.

Ever been researching a census or other record and you find another person living near your ancestor with the same surname, but you don't know how they are related? They probably are part of the family you're researching, so make a note about them and you'll probably be able to add them to your family in the future. Use the Collaborate tab (between the Sources and Memories tabs) on your person's page to create a Note for future reference. Be sure to copy & paste the link to the record in your Note.

Have you heard of one of the most overlooked research aidscalled the FamilySearch Wiki. There is a page for almost every geographical location in the world loaded with great info and loads of links to records. There are also pages to help you decipher old handwriting, research methods, how to begin, and endless other topics. Find it under the main Search tab. Better yet, come to the Center and let us teach you how to use it!

If you're getting together with family over this Labor Day weekend, be sure to make it a family history affair--take photos, record stories, look up Famous Relatives together (using the FamilySearch Tree app; it's one of the Family History Activities). There's no end of ideas, but for sure if you have older family members, record their memories now before it's too late!! The free FamilySearch Memories app makes it super simple to record using your phone, and the audio file transfers automatically into your Memories Gallery in FamilySearch. Have a great holiday!

Have you been wondering if DNA could help you with your family history journey? The answer for most people is a resounding yes! Go to the fine print at the very bottom of any FamilySearch page and click on "DNA." Scroll down to the links: "See The Options," "Next Steps," and "Learn More." And while FamilySearch does not do DNA testing, this page is still a great place to start as it explains the basics of DNA very clearly.
