What to Expect at Your Hearing Evaluation (A Closer Look, Step by Step)
We know coming in for a hearing appointment can feel a little uncertain—so we’ve designed our process to be clear, comfortable, and centered entirely around you.
From the very beginning, we make it easy. After scheduling, you’ll receive friendly reminders by text, email, or phone so your appointment stays on your radar and stress-free.
When you arrive, you’ll check in at the front desk and complete any quick paperwork if needed. Then you can sit back and relax for a few moments until your Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS) personally comes to bring you back. If you’d like, a family member or friend is always welcome to join you.
Once you’re seated in the hearing office, we start with a conversation—not a test. We want to understand what you’ve been experiencing, what’s been frustrating, and what brought you in. From there, we walk you through exactly what to expect during your visit, answering any questions along the way so you feel fully informed and at ease.
Before testing begins, we go over a few important health questions (like dizziness, pain, or sudden hearing changes) to make sure there are no underlying medical concerns that should be addressed first. Then we take a look inside your ears using a small, lighted instrument to check for anything that could affect your hearing or the accuracy of your test.
If everything looks good, we may offer a brief Cognivue screening (optional), which helps us understand how your brain processes sound. It’s simple, takes about 10–12 minutes, and gives us helpful insight—though it’s important to note it’s not a medical diagnosis.
Next comes the hearing evaluation itself. You’ll stay comfortably seated while we guide you through a series of easy listening exercises using soft inserts in your ears. You’ll hear tones, words, and sentences at different levels and simply respond when you hear them. We also check how well you hear in quiet and in noise, along with what sounds are comfortable for you. Throughout the process, we explain what’s happening so nothing feels confusing or overwhelming.
Once testing is complete, we sit down together and review your results in plain, easy-to-understand language. You’ll receive copies, and we’ll talk through what it all means for your daily life.
If hearing aids are a good option, we’ll walk you through what’s available and answer any questions—no pressure. If you’d like to move forward, we can fit and program devices the same day, customized specifically to your hearing needs. You’ll also be shown exactly how to use, clean, and care for them.
And before you leave, we take it one step further—walking with you into a real-world environment to make sure everything sounds right and feels comfortable.
From start to finish, it’s a thoughtful, guided process designed to give you clarity, confidence, and real solutions.
Because better hearing doesn’t start with guesswork—it starts with understanding.
