(1 of 4) Meet Jen, RN-Charge Nurse at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia, Illinois. Having triumphed through tremendous loss due to mental health, Jen has turned tragedy into her testimony. Now serving in Behavioral Health, she advocates for those who cannot advocate for themselves. Follow along as we share her journey.
"I always knew I wanted to work in Behavioral Health. It was my goal, but nursing was not my first profession. By the time I was 20, I was already married with two kids. I started my career as a hairdresser and then ended up doing some factory work at North American Lighting for the insurance benefits. My life ended up taking a drastic turn. I found myself going through a divorce, and shortly after it was finalized, my ex-husband took his life. It was absolutely heartbreaking!
Over 10 years of marriage...how was I not able to help the one person I really wish I could have? Something clicked in me after that loss, and I said, 'You know what? I'm going back to school,' and that is exactly what I did.
I took some pre-requisite classes, became a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), advanced to a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and finally became a Registered Nurse (RN) at 38-years-old. I've been with SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia, Illinois for 15 years and earned my BSN through continued education opportunities. I serve as a Charge Nurse on the Behavioral Health unit, and I love my job! I really do. I love what I do, and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else."
