I had the opportunity to attend the Mount Vernon Chamber's Ribbon cutting for Alpha Home Health and Hospice. This senior care organization provides in-home health care (including nursing and therapies) allowing seniors to remain at home. Alpha Home Health and Hospice has been a very big supporter of the Kern Funeral Home Grief Support Program. We are proud to support the excellent care for seniors provided by Alpha Home Health and Hospice

I attended the La Conner Retirement Inn Annual Car Show this morning. Staff members, led by Stacy Boydston, Executive Director (on the right), were busy preparing for the event. The La Conner Retirement Inn has been a strong supporter of the Kern Funeral Home Grief Support Luncheons, and provides excellent senior independent living housing and community.

I directed a funeral recently at Kern Funeral Home for two Marine vets (husband and wife) who had passed away. The military tributes were amazing. The Marines brought an honor guard, and the American Legion were well-represented at the cemetery. The group that was very impressive were the volunteer rolling honor guard members who held flags during the chapel service, and then escorted on their motorcycles the funeral coach to the cemetery. At the cemetery, they stood with the flags. It was a most impressive display of honor for this couple's service to our country.

I drove to Everett's Eisenhower Middle School today to speak for an AVID Class of 7th and 8th graders about my work as a funeral director at Kern Funeral Home. The event was set up by Janice Ellis and David Chen, members of the Rotary Club of Everett. From left to right are Elizabeth Person, a graphic artist; Janice Ellis, former Superior Court Judge; James Donaldson, former professional basketball player; me; and Sean Paddock, a computer engineer. Not pictured was Danny Rabelos, police officer with the Everett Police Department. It was interesting to see the looks of amazement on the students when James Donaldson walked the halls of the schools.

Every six months, a gathering is held at the Perinatal Garden at Mount Vernon Cemetery. It is a simple yet moving gathering as we remember young lives lost way too soon. We are honored to have Robin Ozaki, a nurse in the pre-natal unit at Skagit Regional Hospital, and Steve and Heather Colvin, founders of AJ's Place, a wonder organization that provides support for those who have lost an infant child. It has become a wonderful partnership that provides hope and encouragement for those who have experienced a perinatal loss.

I had the privilege to facilitate the Celebration of Life for Don Petit. The gathering was held at Cabana Park in Anacortes, WA, on Saturday, March 23. The Petit family was incredibly gracious, as we laughed and cried as we remembered Don. Duby Petit, thank you for inviting me to facilitate and share with your family.

Kern Funeral Home was a major sponsor of this year's Senior Day in the Park held on August 17. A number of vendors, who serve seniors in the community, had booths for Senior Day and an opportunity to interact with others and build relationships. It was great to share with Seniors more about the services and staff of Kern Funeral Home, as well as visit with other senior care providers.

We are pleased to announce the date for the Dedication of a Perinatal Garden at Mount Vernon Cemetery: Saturday, October 15 @ 11:00 AM. This garden was established by Robin Ozaki from Skagit Regional Hospital maternity ward and Steve and Heather Colvin, who lost a daughter born prematurely at 17 weeks. Steve and Heather established a non-profit called AJ's Place, in memory of their daughter for the purpose of supporting those who have experienced the loss of a child. In working with David Lukov from Kern Funeral Home and Mount Vernon Cemetery, they wanted a place to remember the losses of little ones 20 weeks or less in pregnancy. The Perinatal Garden will allow burial of remains in the garden as well as names placed on the monument at no cost to families. This picture shows the monument in which names will be inscribed as well as a heart-shaped marker in front. We hope you will attend the dedication of this garden on Saturday, October 15th at 11:00 AM
