Let's talk about LYME!
Spring is a wonderful time of the year, however it typically comes with the emergence of fleas and ticks.
We would like to discuss the quiet emerging epidemic and the fastest grown vector-borne illness in the U.S.... LYME DISEASE.
Unfortunately it is severely under diagnosed due to lack of awareness and lack of sensitivity of testing.
In fact, legislation in many states has been changing to reflect the high prevalence of false-negative results with standard testing methods and are taking actions to ensure providers inform patients of the lack of sensitivity to standard Lyme testing. Take a look at Iowa's Bill here:

Chronic Lyme disease is a condition that occurs when symptoms of Lyme disease go undiagnosed or persist beyond the standard antibiotic treatment period.
This condition can be challenging to diagnose and treat, as it often presents with a wide range of symptoms that may vary from person to person.
What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. The symptoms of Lyme disease can include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle and joint aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans.
When Lyme disease is not diagnosed and treated promptly, the bacteria can spread throughout the body, leading to chronic inflammation and ongoing symptoms.
Chronic Lyme disease can affect multiple systems in the body, including the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, and immune system.
The symptoms of chronic Lyme disease can vary widely and may include:
1. Fatigue and weakness
2. Joint and muscle pain
3. Cognitive difficulties, including brain fog and memory problems 4. Sleep disturbances
5. Headaches
6. Neurological symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and dizziness
7. Mood disorders, including depression and anxiety
8. Digestive issues
9. Sensitivities to light, sound, and certain foods
10. Chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation
Diagnosis and Treatment: Diagnosing chronic Lyme disease can be challenging, as it requires a comprehensive evaluation of the patient's medical history, symptoms, and potential exposure to ticks.
At Aurora we use the latest in diagnostic laboratory testing to provide the most accurate results for diagnosing Lyme and Co-infections.
Treatment for chronic Lyme disease often involves a multidisciplinary approach, addressing both the underlying infection and any associated symptoms.
This may include:
1. Antibiotic therapy: Depending on the stage and severity of the disease, antibiotics may be prescribed for an extended period to target the Lyme bacteria. Herbal preparations are typically always recommended.
2. Nutritional support: A functional medicine approach may include dietary changes, nutritional supplements, and herbal therapies to support the immune system and reduce inflammation.
3. Lifestyle modifications: Stress management techniques, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are essential for supporting overall health and well-being.
4. Detoxification support: To support the body's natural detoxification pathways, strategies such as sauna therapy, dietary modifications, and targeted supplementation may be recommended.
5. Addressing co-infections: Lyme disease is often accompanied by other infections that can complicate the treatment process. Identifying and treating these co-infections is crucial for a successful outcome.
Functional medicine takes a integrative approach to chronic Lyme disease, considering the unique factors that contribute to each patient's condition.
It's important to remember that chronic Lyme disease is a complex condition, and recovery can take time. Patience, perseverance, and a comprehensive approach to treatment are key to managing symptoms and improving overall health and well-being.
If you suspect you may have chronic Lyme disease, we recommend seeking the guidance of a qualified functional medicine practitioner who specializes in Lyme disease and has experience in treating this complex condition.
