Trauma has a huge impact on our nervous system. When our nervous system is out of whack, we will often do whatever we can soothe it. Majority of the time soothing behaviors without help may be acting out, coping in an unhealthy ways, irritability, screaming, negative self talk, manipulation or physically hitting others or self etc.

While trauma can bring understanding to why someone is acting out, it doesn’t mean the person gets a free pass to act whoever they want.

Someone with trauma can still have accountability and at the same time receive grace. When we choose to soothe the nervous system is healthy ways such as deep breathing, meditation, Brainspotting, somatic releases, bilateral stimulation and more unacceptable behaviors will begin to decrease.

My clients know this one by heart. I say it often.

Some questions to reflect on:
•How can I communicate more clearly?
•Am I avoiding saying something out of fear of hurting another person feelings?
•How is not communicating actually causing more harm?

Over communicate always.

HI EVERYONE 👋🏻

It’s been a minute since I’ve been active on this account. I stepped away due to health issues and to do my own healing work. Thankfully, after resting and taking care of myself, I feel better than ever!

In the time that I’ve been gone, I have a few exciting practice updates.

First, I’m now licensed in Tennessee! While I’m not currently taking new clients, I’m excited to extend my services to my current clients while they may be home in the summer or holidays in TN. Please note, if you know me personally from my time living in TN, I’m unable to see you as a client since it would be a conflict of interest :)

Second, I am now licensed as a clinical social worker supervisor. I have been supervising for almost 2 years already though with the new AL social board requirements, I am now certified. I’m passionate about supervising the next generation of social workers specifically in the realm of individual counseling. I am currently taking on new supervises. Spots are limited.

Third, I went to California a few weeks ago for a Brainspotting intensive. This intervention continues to show incredible deep healing. While I was there I learned advanced Brainspotting techniques that I’m excited to integrate into individual sessions. I am now offering Brainspotting intensives where we have a brainspotting session for 90-120 minutes to be able to clear out more stress and trauma.

Heres to more healing and growth personally and professionally! 💗

Comments on weight loss become a chant for an eating disorder AND there so many other reasons to not comment on weight loss such as:
•medical conditions
•grief
•being in a smaller body is not an accomplishment
•body size isn’t attached to worth
•may be a trigger for someone
•unknowingly praising restriction, binging or purging or over exercise

Also it’s just plain rude. Let all make a pact to not comment on someone’s body in general…yeah? Give me a 👊 if you agree!

If anyone needs the push to delete work email off your phone here it is 📧

Go do it right now before you forget or convince yourself otherwise. Sometimes I invite clients do this in session as a therapeutic task.

This is a boundary I had to learn the HARD way. My counselor looked at me and said “it’s not normal to feel anxiety about checking your email in the middle of a meal or in the middle of the night” 🤯 it was as if I thought that was completely normal. Deleting work email off my phone and having boundaries when I do look at it has saved me so much anxiety. Whatever is there, it can wait. Don’t just delete it for vacation, delete email off your phone for good.

Give me a 👏 if you agree.

God is not up there worried about if you’re going to eat a salad or pizza mmkay? Stop taking scripture out of context saying “your body is a temple” or “eat and drink to glorify God” as a means for disordered eating. These phrases are being said to draw in women of faith who struggle with food and body as a means to sell you the next lifestyle change that is indeed a diet.

Want to know what God does care about? That we have a healthy relationship with food and body. That food is fuel AND pleasure. It’s community and connection. That our bodies are GOOD as they are. God is not asking us to change our body size.

God cares about LIFE so continuing to use use these phrases could very well be a chant for an eating disorder. Which every 62 minutes someone dies from. So check yourself and chose phrases that actually help individuals have healthy relationships with food.

I typically don’t talk about faith on my page but this will light a fire under me real quick. It needed to be said bc it’s all over social media and it ticks me off.

Sound off-what is the worst Christian phrase that is so rooted in diet culture you’ve heard? Let’s call it out-tell me below ⬇️

Talk therapy is helpful in managing trauma symptoms or responses. Talk therapy comes from the pre frontal cortex of the brain (thinking part) where as trauma is stored in the emotional part of the brain (limbic system). So this means there has to be alternative methods to heal this part of the brain.

Examples:
•Brainspotting
•EMDR
•Lifespan Integration
•Ketamine Assisted therapy

If we ignore the body, we stay in our trauma responses of flight, fight or freeze. We have to give our bodies a chance to complete the stress cycle and thaw out. Since starting Brainspotting, I have seen clients move WAY faster through issues because we are addressing the core instead of talking around it. Here’s to holding hope for complete healing instead of learning to merely mange symptoms.

What are your thoughts?! Tell me below ⬇️

The 3 C’s to to making boundaries work:

1) consistency
2) clarity
3) consequences

Without all 3 of these it’s almost a guarantee of someone running right through your boundary. Boundaries take time and someone will need time to adjust if it’s been a long time coming. If someone continues to cross your boundary after these 3 things, it’s deciding whether the relationship needs to shift to not being as close or if you’re able to stay in a relationship with them. Remember boundaries are meant to preserve the relationship not to destroy it.

You cannot begin to heal while ignoring the body.

Thumbing through the book, The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk again and remind how crucial it is to include physical sensations into treatment. I’m going to post quotes from the book the next few weeks and call it .

Emotions become trapped in the body and until we turn towards them we will feel stuck. A few ways to tell when emotions are heavy in the body:
•tightness of chest
•tingling sensations
•heaviness of head
•hyper vigilant (activated)
•hypo arousal (shut down)

Compulsive exercise can make you feel like you are a slave to it.

It feels like a carousel that goes around and around that you can’t get off. Culture convinced us that exercise is always healthy but isn’t always.

When we go against our bodies need for rest or even working from a place of compensation, we are becoming more disconnected with ourselves.

Next time you find yourself having to urge to compulsively exercise, ask yourself “what am I really needing?” “Can I care for this anxious or shameful part of myself in a more productive way?”

You can break this cycle. Promise.

Orthorexia nervosa is essentially an obsession with “healthy” or “clean” eating. While orthorexia is not officially in the DSM V, it is a very disordered relationship with food.

I believe this is the most accepted form of disordered eating in our culture because it’s viewed as “healthy” when it is actually incredibly unhealthy.

Orthorexia can stem from:
⭐️a desire to be perfect
⭐️a means of trying to find control (it will actually make you feel out of control around food)
⭐️wanting to feel powerful or higher than others
⭐️a desire for accomplishment

thankfully, you don’t have to feel this way forever. You can heal your relationship with food and begin to unlearn the rules you’ve made for yourself.

What other signs of Orthorexia would you add?

Thrilled to share I am officially a certified Brainspotting therapist! This means I have completed 2 trainings, over 50 sessions and 6 hours of consultation. I am 1 of 3 certified in Alabama! I cannot get enough of this modality personally and professionally.

You cannot heal trauma and ignore the body. Talk therapy only cannot heal trauma-I strong believe this within my practice and because it’s science

Talk therapy is done from the pre frontal cortex of the brain (thinking brain) which can be helpful to an extent to manage behaviors and gain insight. Deeper emotions are stored in the subcortical and reptilian brain. When trauma happens if we only talk about it, we are only managing it instead of healing the reptilian part of the brain where emotions are housed. This is where Brainspotting comes in to reach into the emotional brain and following that the brain and body knows how it heal itself. Sometimes it needs a little guidance.
