Halloween falls on a Friday, which is the one day of the week I meet with my couples in person.

So I now face a haunting dilemma: Should a couples therapist dress up for Halloween? 🧐

Sure, it might be hard to discuss attachment needs while your therapist is dressed as a T-Rex 🦖. And I'm not too certain if a therapist dressed as a slice of pizza 🍕really encourages deep emotional exploration.

But when I think about it, Halloween (and therapy) reminds me about the masks we wear and what it means to be our most authentic selves. 🎭

So maybe the costume question isn’t just for Halloween. In therapy (and in loving relationships), we’re all learning which parts of ourselves are ready to be seen.

Happy Halloween from your favorite couples therapist, who may or may not be in costume, but is definitely fueled by candy. 🍫

Doing the "right" thing with your partner, especially during periods of disconnect or conflict, can be so very hard.

Craving that deeper type of connection where you both feel heard and understood?

Feeling like you're trapped in an endless cycle of hurt and pain?

I love when men of influence are able to highlight and normalize the importance of taking care of your mental health.

Thank you Michael B Jordan for speaking up and helping to reduce the stigma around mental health!

September may be over, but su***de prevention and awareness is ongoing.

This month, I'll be sharing resources on how to navigate depression. The days will start becoming shorter and colder, and symptoms of seasonal affective disorder may start to show up.

Check back often to learn how to keep yourself healthy and safe as we enter this new season 🍂

Saying "I'm sorry" is not enough.

Your partner doesn’t want to hear empty words. They want to know you see their hurt and understand how your actions impacted them.

It's not about being perfect, it's about creating a safe and secure relationship.
In emotionally focused couples therapy, we call this repair. A real apology isn’t just saying the words. It's showing remorse, owning your part, and speaking to the emotional wound underneath.

Otherwise, ‘I’m sorry’ just sounds like: "please drop it so I can move on"

Want to rebuild trust? Don’t just say sorry - SHOW you’re sorry.

Try it tip: when you apologize, describe how your partner was negatively impacted by your words or actions

I’m deeply grateful and forever changed by the opportunity to travel to Southeast Alaska and learn from those serving rural and Alaska Native communities. Thank you Carolina and Theresa (Alaska EFT), DrBelle Anabelle (Southern-Nevada EFT), and Dr Teri Murphy for providing such engaging experiences!

As a therapist, the work of learning is never finished. Learning from and about the Tlingit people and other Alaska Native communities, reminded me that continued learning is not optional. It was a profound honor to be afforded the opportunity to listen, to learn, and to carry those lessons forward.

The conversations around su***de prevention, cultural considerations, and the unique challenges of providing care through telehealth have provided new insight and guidance into the care I strive to provide my clients.

So incredibly appreciative of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes for allowing me the privilege to serve tribal members as part of the Love Heals Free Clinic this week. It was an honor to be afforded the opportunity to have a teepee as a workspace!
