As we enter into a new week, I invite you and your partner to engage in an exercise of gratitude and appreciation.
Each day, leading up to Thanksgiving, write down one thing you appreciate about your partner. It could be a word, a sentence (or two), or even a memory. On Thanksgiving, take turns sharing what you appreciate about one another.
Taking intentional time to think positively about one another acts as a buffer during conflicts. Having a more positive view of your partner can override negative feelings, making it easier to be patient, give the benefit of the doubt, and have constructive conversations.
Drs John & Julie Gottman call this "positive sentiment override," and it's an essential component for healthy and happy relationships.
