Darren Calhoun, RN, one of our Device Integration System Specialists, recently took on a 100-mile cycling event in Michigan to support a charity that grants wishes for critically ill children.

Being born in Michigan, the event caught Darren’s attention, and after learning that two of his sister’s former students had received wishes through the organization, he knew he had to be part of it.

With the support of friends, family, hospital volunteers, his care provider and clinic staff, and even strangers, Darren exceeded his fundraising goal and completed the ride.

When asked about his experience and reasoning, he replied, "In my mind, I felt as though riding 70, 80, or even a hundred miles in a day, prior to the event, was not what I wanted to do. I felt as though the challenge was part of the experience. Can I do it? I also had another thing going for me, it was a great cause. Raising money for critically ill children was something I had never done as an adult. To do something physically and psychologically challenging to help others was a challenge I could not resist. Being a nurse means you care and this was a worthy cause! There is also the fact that having done a 100 mile ride in a day, would I ever want to do it again and what if I failed?"

Near the end of the ride, Darren experienced a heartwarming moment. When asked about it, he shared:

“Near the end of the 100-mile route, I stopped and asked a group if I could ride to the finish line with them. They said, ‘It would be an honor.’ As we entered the parking lot of Marshall High School, riders began getting off their bikes. A rider told me, ‘This is the Silent Mile.’ Along the grass were blue stars, each one with the name or photo of a child who had received a wish and had passed on. The emotional bomb that went off was indescribable. One rider turned to me and said, ‘The pain we just went through was nothing compared to what these kids endured.’”

Thank you, Darren, for going the extra mile, and representing Baxter Health with compassion and heart. 💙

Join us for a learning session from Baxter Health Physical Therapist, Joyce Yarborough! She will be sharing about Physical Therapy: Before and After Orthopedic Surgery on Thursday, August 28th at 1:00 PM at the Schliemann Center for Women.

Elective orthopedic surgeries grow each year due to continued advancements in surgical techniques and the aging US population. Physical therapy is a key component in helping patients to recover successfully. Come and hear about what you might expect with an orthopedic surgery and why physical therapy afterwards (and sometimes even before) can help you recover even faster!

To sign up or learn more, please call 870-508-2345. We hope to see you there!

Patricia Calhoun said, "Dr. Knox and the entire staff at Baxter Health Bone and Joint Clinic are beyond amazing! After years of suffering with shoulder pain, Dr. Knox surgically repaired it to brand new. I was then referred to Physical Therapy and began working with Triza Genito, PT. I am so very grateful to her for all the hard work she did with me and for her kindness and patience.

"I worked also with Nathan Riley, PTA, who was equally as kind and patient. Everyone in the department was wonderful and I would never go anywhere else for any PT needs. I, without hesitation, recommend Baxter Health Physical Therapy and Dr. Knox to anyone needing their services!"

Congratulations to Miranda Worsham, ADN, RN, 3 South, Baxter Health Behavioral Health! She was presented a Heroes with Halos Award by Rachel Gilbert, VP/Chief Nursing Officer; Sarah Edwards, Executive Director, Baxter Health Foundation; Tobias Pugsley, VP/Marketing & Communications; Karen Painter, MSN, RN, PMH-BC Director, Behavioral Health, and members of the Behavioral Health Staff.

A donor wrote:
"There are so many reasons why Miranda would deserve this award, but one comes to mind where she has gone out of her way and beyond her job. She has quite literally saved my life.

There’s a medication that I need, but there would be a specific physician I would need to see. Miranda went beyond her job and was able to set me up with this doctor. She didn’t have to, but she did.

She is one of the kindest, sweetest souls I have ever come to know and love. She’s changed my life for the better and she deserves all the recognition for all the amazing hard work she does!"
