Calling all Bay Area high school students – make a difference and have a summer of fun! Join high school students from across the Bay Area for a 2-week service learning program with our community partner Youth Community Service

The YCS Summer of Service is a service program for youth to engage in community leadership and civic engagement. Youth will have the opportunity to work together to plan service projects for the community, develop messaging and storytelling skills, and practice leadership and public speaking skills in a supportive, fun, engaging environment.

YCS Summer of Service will include: leadership training, team building, team service projects, service in the community facilitated by YCS with our many community partners, and opportunities to lead others in service.

Director of Drop-in Center, Bill Wilson Center

With over a decade of experience in the nonprofit sector, Leo has dedicated her career to supporting vulnerable and underserved communities. She began as a residential counselor working closely with youth facing significant challenges - an experience that sparked her lifelong commitment to advocacy and direct service. Leo later expanded her work to support individuals experiencing homelessness, focusing on rehabilitation, resource connection, and helping people navigate complex systems to rebuild stability and hope. Today, as Director of the Drop-in Center at Bill Wilson Center, Leo continues to champion education, healing, and long-term support for those most in need.

Young people are experiencing unprecedented levels of adversity - from housing instability, uncertainty around immigration status and economic security to struggling with identity, isolation, and the lasting impacts of unresolved trauma. Despite these realities, we continue to see how resilience can be cultivated when youth are surrounded by compassion, opportunity, and trust.

🌟 Panelist Spotlight: Dr. Candice Arora
Co-founder of The Arora Collective and educator, Dr. Arora brings over 20 years of experience supporting youth and families navigating adversity and change. Candice partners with nonprofits, schools, and community organizations to build values-driven leadership, turn community voices into action, and create systems that foster belonging and access. She’s passionate about the power of positive adult relationships and creating spaces where youth and those who support them can show up authentically. A 7th grade social studies teacher at 's Columbia Middle School, Mariel brings her lived experience as a proud undocumented immigrant into her work, creating a classroom rooted in belonging, courage, and critical thinking. A graduate of University of California, Santa Barbara and Stanford University, her journey reflects the power of community and collective action.

Inspired by her great-grandfather’s stories as a Bracero worker, Mariel teaches her students that history is not just something we learn - it’s something we shape together. Through open dialogue and inclusive spaces, she empowers young people to see themselves in history and to know that their stories matter.
