On Tuesday, September 30, the City of Palo Alto - Public Agency Council presented a proclamation in recognition of Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. The proclamation was received by the Project Safety Net (PSN) Coalition. Acknowledge Alliance had the pleasure of attending this important occasion and being a proud partner and member of the PSN Coalition. The PSN Coalition is comprised of many youth-based nonprofits, school districts, and local agencies dedicated to promoting youth mental health and su***de prevention. Acknowledge Alliance is a proud partner of PSN and continues the work of su***de prevention.

October 4-12 is Compassion Week, which brings together volunteers of all ages and abilities to complete 100+ meaningful service projects. During this inspiring event, volunteers work tirelessly to support local organizations that focus on meeting the basic needs of our neighbors year-round. The need in our community is great, but so is our combined ability to help. Let’s join our neighbors to build a stronger and more empathetic community!

We had a great time at the Palo Alto Online & Palo Alto Weekly Moonlight Run last Friday! 🌕✨🏃‍♂️ Thank you to everyone that stopped by our table to grab some sweet treats, bookmarks, and Acknowledge Alliance stress balls. This past school year, 24 students in TK through 6th grade and their families received individualized support from Acknowledge Alliance Resilience Counselors. 💯% of students felt their counselor was on their side and really listened to them. Students learned to apply new skills such as expressing feelings, setting boundaries, and using breathing techniques. Teachers consistently reported that counseling was highly valuable, noting improvements in students’ coping skills, self-reflection, social interactions, and emotional regulation.

The children and teenagers in your life are likely feeling the full load of being a month into the new school year. Today’s young people are facing increased academic pressure, heightened social anxiety, and less free time due to over-scheduling with extracurricular activities (Cedars-Sinai, 2024). All this increased stress and burnout is leading to mental health symptoms in young people. A CDC study found that “1 in 6 students had enough behavioral or emotional symptoms and impairment to be diagnosed with a childhood mental disorder” (Today, 2023). Alarmingly, a separate 2023 CDC study found that “75% of teen girls living in the United States felt persistently sad or hopeless in 2021 (Today, 2023). With such sobering statistics, we can all do our part to support the wellbeing of the young people in our lives by helping them manage back-to-school stress. September 11 is the National Day of Service and Remembrance, and our community partner Youth Community Service is teaming up with other local organizations to make a positive impact in our local community through service. From now through the month of October, community members of all ages are invited to fulfill donation drives, sign up for at-home or in-person projects, and create crafts for a cause. Let’s honor the memory of all the individuals who lost their lives on September 11, 2021 by sharing unity, kindness and service.
