Acknowledge Alliance wishes everyone a happy and safe Labor Day. Did you know Labor Day is rooted in the late 19th century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize both the many contributions and the mistreatment of American workers? Today we celebrate the contributions of American workers to our country’s strength and prosperity, and continue to support the fight for fair and equitable working conditions for all.

Summer is winding down and the new school year is already upon us. While parents are busy dusting off backpacks and shuttling their kids through drop-off lines, educators at our partner schools are feverishly working to get their years started off well. Whether they are new teachers or seasoned veterans, the first days of instruction are a critical time for teachers to lay the foundations of a successful classroom before any sort of formal learning takes place. Research shows that when “young people maintain positive school-based relationships, their learning and well-being is supported and enhanced” (Hernández & Darling-Hammond, 2024).

Through individualized check-ins, teacher and principal resilience groups, coaching, and skill-building, our staff work with educators to help them establish caring, trusted relationships with their students and build classrooms where students feel emotionally safe and supported. Every August 26 since 1973, we celebrate the accomplishments women have made and commemorate passage of the 19th Amendment as part of Women’s Equality Day. The 19th Amendment in 1920 granted voting rights to everyone regardless of gender, but we are reminded today that much work is still needed to create a more perfect and inclusive democracy that welcomes EVERYONE to participate. Together, let’s honor the achievements of women’s rights activists and remember to continue fighting for equality for all.

The San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women is hosting “Her Voice. Her Power. Our Future. Raising Voices for Community Prosperity” — a Women’s Equality Day event celebrating women's right to vote and amplifying the voices of women who are shaping equitable and thriving communities. Just as we used our voices to gain the vote, so too must we use our voices to close the pay and wealth gap and guarantee more accessible and affordable childcare. Interested in shaping City of Redwood City’s future? Want to better understand how your local government works and how you can help? You're in luck! Applications are now open for Redwood City’s 2025 Community Building Academy (CBA). This 7 week program offers residents an inside look at city operations, opportunities to meet local leaders and city staff, and a meaningful way to become more involved in the community.

You will visit city departments including fire, police, public works, libraries, parks, and planning. You will build relationships with city staff and fellow residents, explore important local issues, and graduate with opportunities to share your ideas with City leaders.
