We’re excited to welcome Angela Patriarca to Crave for her Backbends Reimagined for Every Body workshop.

❓ Backbends are a special focus of your upcoming workshop at Crave, what draws you to this part of the practice?

🌟 What draws me to backbends is that they are my most difficult dimension of the body to open. I’ve had to work very hard to achieve extension in the spine and openness in the upper back and shoulders. This kind of breakthrough in the body is the sweet stuff of practice.

❓ What are some of the most common misconceptions or fears about backbends, and how do you help students work through them?

🌟 The major misconception about backbends is that they are hard. What people really mean is that they’re trying to open up parts of the spine that aren’t ready to be opened yet. But if you know where to start, backbends feel good, like a massage.

❓ What can students expect from your 2-hour workshop?

🌟 Students can expect to be introduced to a series of yoga drills designed to systematically open and energize their backbends. Think of it like a yoga gym for backbends, or Orangetheory with a backbend theme. We’ll work through specific sequences that progressively prepare different parts of the body, building strength and mobility exactly where it’s needed.

🚨 Backbends Reimagined: a workshop for every body with guest teacher Angela
Patriarca

Whether you’ve felt intimidated, struggled with technique, or want to deepen your practice, you’ll learn a systematic approach that makes backbends accessible and empowering. We’ll break down the essentials—energizing the pelvis, opening the shoulders, and creating intelligent spinal extension—while exploring how energy flows through your spine. Rather than forcing shapes, you’ll discover how to work with your unique structure to counteract daily compression and restore posture. Leave with the tools to make any backbend feel safe, achievable, and revitalizing.

From rooftops to redwoods, our Crave teachers are soaking up the sunshine, keeping it playful and striking a pose wherever summer takes them.

😻 Elena finds her flow in the backyard, cat included, of course, proving yoga is always better with a furry friend nearby.

🌲 Nikki strikes a bold warrior pose in the Rose Garden, perfectly poised between two towering redwoods, like the forest rolled out the mat just for her.

🌉 Vangie takes flight in crow pose on the rooftop of her San Francisco home, with the city skyline cheering her on.

🌞 Marti gets low and grounded in pigeon pose, soaking in the summer stillness and stretching it out with serious style.

🌲 Joni channels pure serenity in tree pose among the towering redwoods at Redwood Grove in Los Altos.

🌳 Jen finds her calm atop a sun-kissed hill at Mariner’s Island Park, holding tree pose as the sky opens wide around her, equal parts strength and serenity.

📸 Send us a photo of you in your favorite pose, on a mountain, at the beach, in a hotel room, backyard, or even your living room. Near or far, fancy or funny, we’d love to see how you’re keeping your practice alive and share you on our socials and newsletter.

Featured Student: Nidhi

Nidhi’s yoga journey is one of transformation, humor, and heart. Since stepping into Crave nearly four years ago, she’s completed over 300 classes, found strength through motherhood, and turned her practice into a lifeline of self-care. Her story is a beautiful reminder that yoga meets us exactly where we are, and sometimes, the ultimate goal really is just a good nap in savasana 😴

❓ How long have you been practicing yoga?

🧘 This is my fourth year of practicing yoga, all with Crave Yoga. I took a year’s break to have a baby, then got back to the studio five months postpartum. It was difficult to stay away for long.

❓ What sparked your initial interest?

🧘 Pains, pains, and more pains. I had my fair share of aches, some because of injuries, others because of my sedentary lifestyle. I was constantly going to physiotherapists and chiropractors. Doctors and even non-doctors started asking, “Have you thought of Yoga?” This caught my attention. All those years, I kind of hated yoga. Not because I didn’t like it, rather because I didn’t know how to do it. Starting it in a class of 100 made it worse.

❓ Do you have a favorite yoga class? If so, what makes it stand out for you?

🧘 This is such a difficult question. This is like picking a favorite color from a rainbow or a favorite dish from a buffet. Can I pick like four? Each one stands out for me! There’s Joni’s slow flow that gives deep relaxation – my Sundays and Mondays with her. Or Kelsey’s Friday’s super relaxing seasonal cleanse infused with a sound bath and Koshi chime. Then there’s Helena’s pampering Flow & Restore – essential oils, hot stones, teas, eye pillows, chants; her classes are better than a spa session. And there’s Misha’s passionate Vinyasa Flow aka “Pigeon-o-clock” and head-to-toe relaxation! Why pick a favorite when I can savor them all? 😊

❓ What aspects of your yoga practice do you find most fulfilling?

🧘 Of course, a well-earned Savasana!

Nidhi, thank you for sharing your story. From overcoming pain to showing up for over 300 classes (WOW!)your commitment, humor, and heart shine through. 👏🏼
