A pterygium is a non-cancerous growth of the clear, thin tissue (conjunctiva) that lays over the white part of the eye (sclera) and the cornea. This condition is more common in people with excess outdoor exposure to sunlight and wind. The eclipse will be exciting to experience in August but you must wear appropriate eclipse viewing glasses to avoid a retinal burn. Regular sunglasses will not protect your retina!

Even during an eclipse, when the moon blocks part of the sunlight, you cannot look directly at the sun without very strong protective eye wear.
