In order to protect against all respiratory viruses, Santa Clara County and other local counties are once again mandating, as of today, 11/1/2023, that anyone entering a health care facility must once again wear a protective face mask (surgical mask N95, or KN95--not cloth or scarves) in public patient areas. This will extend through the end of March 2024.

Health officials in several Bay Area counties have issued new mask mandates as COVID-19 cases continued to rise and in preparation for the upcoming respiratory virus season.

This sneaked up on me, so passing it along: Tomorrow, March 13th, Daylight Savings Time starts again, so set your clocks forward one hour.
Happy spring!

I only just learned this from a patient yesterday, but thought it was worth passing along. You can be paid or reimbursed under health flexible spending accounts (health FSAs), health savings accounts (HSAs) or health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs) for the face masks you or your kids use for protection against COVID. These have been reimbursable expenses since 2021. However, if an amount is paid or reimbursed under a health FSA, HSA, HRA or any other health plan, it is not deductible for tax purposes (no double dipping).

Thank you to everyone supporting our office for your holiday gifts instead of Amazon or Costco. We appreciate it, believe us!

Interesting study about coffee during pregnancy.

Study: Moderate coffee intake tied to reduced gestational diabetes risk

A study in JAMA Network Open found that consumption of a moderate amount of coffee during the second trimester of pregnancy was associated with a better cardiometabolic profile, reduced risk for gestational diabetes and lower glucose levels at gestational diabetes screening, compared with no consumption of coffee. The study, based on data from 2,583 pregnant people, also found that caffeine consumption was not linked with pre-eclampsia or gestational hypertension, and the authors said the findings should reassure people who drink moderate amounts of coffee during pregnancy.

As Santa Clara County goes into the "orange," we still need to require face masks for everyone in our office, social distance at least 6 feet away, and continue our infection control procedures, even with all of our staff vaccinated against COVID-19. As the County stated in their email to our office: "Just because the State allows certain activities to resume or adopts certain COVID protocols, that does not mean that those activities are safe." Stay safe, everyone!

Spring ahead! Don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour.
