Many parents believe there is something wrong if their breastfeeding baby’s weight isn’t above the 50th percentile. While it is human to want our children to excel, the assumption that babies at a higher weight percentile are healthier or somehow “better” reflects a basic misunderstanding of growth charts and what they mean.

But parents are not the only ones confused. A U.K. study2 examined both mothers’ and healthcare providers’ perceptions of growth charts, and found that many mothers worried about their baby’s weight gain between checkups and that both mothers and healthcare providers erroneously considered the 50th percentile a goal to be achieved. When babies fell below the 50th percentile, healthcare providers often recommended the mothers give their babies formula and solid foods to try to boost baby’s weight gain to reach this “desirable” percentile. The researchers concluded that healthcare providers need more training on how to assess the growth of breastfeeding babies and how to support breastfeeding rather than undermine it.

Celebrating Mother's Day, Celebrating the Joys, Challenges & Victories of 8 Breastfeeding Mothers...

The Breastfeeding Journey of Mommy Nizs & Baby J

"Having my fourth baby after a 7-year gap was challenging, but I was determined to breastfeed him, just like his two brothers before him, who were exclusively breastfed until they were 4 years old (born in 2015 and 2017). We even tandem-fed them!

However, my experience with my eldest was different. Born in 2008, I was a young mom with limited support and resources. I only breastfed him for six months due to the pain and lack of guidance. Back then, many advised mixing feeding methods and stopping breastfeeding after six months.

But with my second and third children, social media and support groups like Breastfeeding Pinay Philippines (especially the Olongapo team) made a huge difference. They taught me effective techniques like cup-feeding and hand expression, which helped me sustain my milk supply while working. I didn't need an electric breast pump for four years!

Special thanks to amazing moms who supported my breastfeeding journey! Mommy Ailyn Jacinto SanDiego played a vital role in educating me on exclusive breastfeeding with my second child, Drake, in 2015.

With this fourth baby, I'm grateful for Mommy Mithi Laya Gonzales-Suarez and Jesserline Mascardo, who patiently answered my questions and doubts, especially during the crucial first week when milk supply was low. Their encouragement and guidance helped me persevere.

Now, at 2 months and 7 days, I'm thrilled to have an abundant milk supply! Their support made all the difference.

Thank you for being pillars of support and inspiration. Your guidance and encouragement mean the world to me!

This journey showed me the importance of support, education, and determination in achieving breastfeeding goals. Every mother's experience is unique, and it's essential to prioritize self-care, seek help when needed, and celebrate small victories."
