When 14-year-old Lieza Zeb was at basketball practice, she noticed her legs beginning to feel heavy and she was struggling to move them. After an emergency room visit and an MRI, it was revealed that she had a cavernoma in her brain that required surgery. Following the surgery, Lieza suffered a stroke that left her entire right side unable to properly function. After spending 11 days in her local hospital’s Intensive Care Unit in New York, she was transferred to Children’s Specialized Hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

While at CSH, Lieza received 24-hour medical and nursing care along with intensive daily physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapy. “The therapists motivated me, and it made me want to do better,” Lieza shared. Day by day, Lieza grew stronger and more independent. She went from being unable to use her right arm and leg, relying on a wheelchair and walker, and requiring help to complete all her self-care skills to walking on her own, moving her right leg, shoulder, elbow, and wrist, and completing daily tasks independently. Lieza was also able to regain cognitive skills thanks to Speech and Language therapy.

Lieza was discharged just in time to attend her 8th grade graduation, where she was cheered on by classmates, teachers, and family as she proudly walked across the stage to receive her diploma. 👏🎓

“My little guy enjoyed his first day of speech with Alexis in Union. She was warm and engaging and adapted the session very organically once she learned a bit about some of Micah’s interests. She was so magical, she had this busy bee locked in for most of the session which is very impressive for a 2 year old, not to mention she sings very beautifully and incorporated that into the session. Thank you for the work you do.” ❤️
