✨ MUSC Nurse Spotlight: Allison Adrian, RN — From the NICU to the Classroom ✨

For Allison Adrian, nursing has always been about moments of meaning — whether watching a fragile NICU infant beat the odds or seeing her students walk across the graduation stage after overcoming challenges of their own.

“Those milestones stay with you,” she shares. “Watching students reach their goals fills me with the same pride I felt in the NICU.”

Allison’s calling to nursing wasn’t linear. After losing her brother at a young age, she wondered if she could handle the emotional weight of the profession. But years later, witnessing the compassionate care hospice nurses provided to her grandmother and parents reaffirmed what she always knew in her heart — she was meant to answer the call.

Today, she brings her NICU foundation into the classroom, co-teaching women’s health and pharmacology, and guiding students through everything from complex content to NCLEX-style questions. Her favorite part? Being a steady source of encouragement during the most challenging moments of the accelerated BSN program.

“I believe in them deeply,” she says. “And I know they’re going to go on to do incredible things."

From the pediatric bedside to the Navy and now the classroom, Matthew Engelhardt has built a career rooted in compassion, resilience, and service. A young patient with leukemia once reminded him of the profound privilege of caring for families during their most challenging moments — a lesson that continues to guide him today.

Now an instructor in MUSC’s accelerated nursing program, Matthew is dedicated to helping students bridge classroom learning with real-world practice. Watching future nurses grow in confidence and compassion is the most rewarding part of his journey. His passion, mentorship, and commitment to nursing education inspire both his colleagues and his students every day.
