🦷 Do We Live to Work — or Work to Live?
Dentistry is a rewarding profession, but like many careers in healthcare, it can also be demanding. A thoughtful article from the ADA’s New Dentist Blog reminds us that work–life balance isn’t a fixed destination—it’s something that evolves throughout life and career.
The author explains that balance is not about perfect symmetry between work and life. Instead, it’s about alignment—making sure our effort, values, and responsibilities match the stage of life we’re in.
Early in a dental career, work often takes center stage. Long hours are not necessarily a failure of balance—they’re often an investment in building skills, confidence, and financial stability. Over time, however, the nature of the workload changes. Physical demands may decrease, but cognitive, emotional, and organizational pressures often increase.
The article also highlights an important truth about burnout. When professionals acknowledge that they’re in a demanding phase, they can plan for recovery and growth. But when stress is ignored or denied, it can become overwhelming. Often, the issue isn’t simply time management—it’s the accumulation of responsibilities.
Another key point is that not everyone begins their career from the same starting point. Some dentists must work harder or longer to stay afloat. Recognizing these realities helps normalize the challenges many professionals face.
Ultimately, balance is something we build through awareness, emotional intelligence, and realistic expectations. Life—and dentistry—won’t always feel perfectly balanced. But understanding where we are in the journey can help us move toward healthier alignment over time.
At Harbour Place Dental, we believe caring for others starts with maintaining balance, purpose, and well-being in our own lives, too. Read more:
