This week is Su***de Awareness Week and I decided it may be time to share this *big part* of why I am a nutritionist!

May 2013 I tried to take my own life and this picture is 6 days post-attempt.

In hindsight, 8 years isn’t really that long of a time, but it seems like ages ago because I’ve come so far from that dark place.

I look happy as hell though, don’t I?!? 🧐

But that’s the thing about depression, anxiety and other mental health illnesses - they are completely INVISIBLE.

If you’d have asked me how I was, I would’ve lied and told you I felt “great”.

So what does this have to do with the PRESENT??

Well, now I work with women JUST LIKE ME who are suffering from mental illness and hormone imbalances and are seeking a natural way out through food and herbs 🌿🍄

Is it easy for them? Hell no!

Does it take time? YES! In fact, I work with most women 12-16 weeks to resolution!

Is it rewarding for them? Hell yes! And rewarding for me too!

Can you imagine a world where you aren’t in a constant high and low state, but every day is balanced?

I once drove over an hour in the WRONG direction 🤦‍♀️

I was driving around western Michigan and got completely confused around Grand Rapids and ended up driving south somehow- oops!

If you know me, you know I’m not super great at math… definitely a creative type!

BUT it didn’t take me long to realize I’d just added over TWO HOURS to my trip…. *insert explicits*

I was so discouraged and mad that I didn’t check Maps sooner…

I quickly got into the “I give up, I’ll just stop and live here now because this is terrible” mindset!

If you’re still reading this, you’re probably like “why do I care about this drive you took like 6 years ago?”

💥Because sometimes in life, health and wellness , we get lost

We fall off course and before we know it we’re traveling in the wrong direction, confused and usually hyper-focused on the tiny details vs the holistic picture

You see, this wasn’t the only time I found myself traveling off course and focusing on the wrong things…

I did it a few years later with my health as well. Focusing on all the wrong things.

Visiting medical doctors, getting prescription drugs that targeted one symptom and then more prescriptions to offset the symptoms from the first medications….

What a vicious cycle!

Racing thoughts, tight chest, the feeling of your body getting hot from the top of your head all the way to the tips of your fingers and toes....

Anxiety. What a bitch.

"Deep breaths. Remember your mantra, remember your mantra! Close your eyes, count back from 10, everything is going to be okay, it will be okay!!"

The first headway I made in my PMDD/depression journey was when I started including an Omega-3 supplement in my diet!

Research shows that Omega-3s are not only an effective treatment for depression and anxiety, but also for severe PMS symptoms!

Some of you may know, I was hardcore keto for over 2 years…including my last pregnancy 🤦‍♀️😅

So I wanted to share my current stance on keto with you all now as I have learned, grown and suffered enough for all of us!

Don’t do it.

Unless you are eating keto for therapeutic reasons (and Type 2 diabetes isn’t one of them btw), I will encourage you to not put your body through that.

And I know some of you are going to want to come after me for this, but hear me out first please!

When you “go keto” your body is completely restricted of carbs. Do you know what needs lots of carbs to function?

👉 Your thyroid!

Most women doing keto will not focus on fruits and veggies, but instead on meats and fats.

And while yes, we DO need protein and healthy fats in our diet, you’ll probably gravitate towards cheese and Mayo instead of avocado and salmon.

Your body begs you for carbs, your endocrine system can’t keep up, your cortisol levels (stress hormone) will probably go through the roof. You may be exhausted, but also can’t sleep until midnight or later and of course, your mood is all over the place.

I know this because I was there.
I legitimately GAVE MYSELF hypothyroidism.

My body was shutting down and I felt hopeless.

So what should you do instead??
Nourish👏your👏body👏

Eliminate known trigger foods and then eat to your hearts content!

Don’t know your trigger foods? Journal it out!

Nutrition doesn’t have to be hard, restricted and confusing!

Eating should be enjoyable, fulfilling and satisfying. You can absolutely learn to speak your bodies nutrition language!

“My hormones are normal, I just want to get this extra weight off, can you help me?”

This is a common question I get during my breakthrough calls potential clients.

And my response is almost always something along the lines of, “Tell me about your cycles. How are your moods? How’s your energy?”

It’s simple for us to start there.

Because you see, what you’re missing is the key to unlock all your healing - your root cause!

So when you have symptoms like:
•Heavy clots/painful cramps
•Hair loss/thinning
•Sore breasts
•Cold/tingly hands and feet
•Chronic fatigue
•Stubborn weight gain

Or other symptoms that society has told us are “just a part of being a mom” or “just a part of growing older”….

I’m here to tell you that there’s an issue and we need to uncover the root cause!

Being in agony and feeling sh*tty for 7-30 days out of each month isn’t just part of being a woman!

Start by writing down all of the maybe-not-so-normal symptoms that come to mind. Track them for the next week or two. Post them below or send them to me in a message!

Let’s normalize what feeling normal TRULY is.

Sometimes it really comes down to the age old question - are you eating your fruits and veggies??

This is one of the most common questions I receive from clients….

“I see you wrote down 8-10 servings of vegetables, did you mean that?”🤔

YES, I meant it!🥦🥬🫐

Most Americans only eat 2-3 servings of fruits and vegetables EACH DAY!

(And unless you’re a toddler, that’s not going to cut it)

It from a functional standpoint, in order to give your body a chance to function appropriately and heal itself we need 8-10 servings daily.

So what do vegetables do for you when it comes to healing a mental health disorder, a tired endocrine system or a hormonal imbalance?

They allow you to properly detox your body and provide you with the adequate nutrients to fuel your brain, your body and your happiness! 🧠

And that’s when the true magic happens!

When you start loading up on fiber and nutrients, you can start properly detoxing and eliminating💩

You start looking forward to more energy, better moods, balanced blood sugar, hormone regulation and so much more!

I personally sit between 7-10 servings of veggies daily and I am NOT vegetarian or vegan!

On days I get the American average of 2-3 servings, I feel sluggish, brain fog, bloated, fatigued, less happy…

Learning about nutrigenomics (eating for your genes) was the most fascinating part of schooling for nutrition and for my doctorate!

So why can’t you heal from your anxiety, depression, hypothyroidism or anything else??
