AHEC has allowed me explore career opportunities, network with employers, and fully indulge myself in associations/programs within niches of my interest during my graduate studies. This previous week I attended the Indiana National School Nutrition Conference in French Lick, Indiana. This conference hosted over 300 individuals from varying schools across the state, over 100 venders advocating for student and children health, and resources to help registered dietitian, school facilities, and managers to communicate and inspire on another to implement strategies and programs for unmet needs in their schools. I learned how to navigate new FDA guidelines, implement sustainable initiatives, and the importance of balanced meals for children of all ages and incomes.

Favorite part: Our keynote speaker, Vickie Coffee, spoke on reframing your mind in personal and professional settings from an “I can’t” to exploring the reasons for this (ex. I don’t want to, I am fearful, I don’t want to fail). What truly is the barrier for these words, “I can’t”? In addition, I connected with likeminded individuals during sessions, networked with venders, and gained professional experience to build my resume post graduate studies. The Ross Community Center has been at the forefront of combatting food insecurity in our community over the last few years. In view of the upcoming cuts in SNAP benefits, we continue with our pledge to support our community members who will be even more deeply affected by these adverse circumstances. We are partnering with our Thomas Park Neighborhood Association to address food insecurity among our neighbors in the upcoming days. We are delighted that three community members have already reached out to donate to us for this cause, for which we are very grateful. We will strive to provide food more frequently, and two ways in which we will address this issue will be through our bi-weekly free community market and having shelf-stable foods for families throughout the week.

We have a strong partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank from whom we purchase food to share at our free community market every other Friday and we look forward to deepening this partnership to share larger quantities of food. Our next market will be on Friday November 7 beginning at 3 pm, until we run out of food. Should anyone be interested in donating to support our community through these trying times of food insecurity, you can do so in several ways:

(1) By donating through our website www.rosscentermuncie.org/donate , with a note saying it is for food.

(2) Sending us a check written out to the Ross Community Center with food in the memo line.

(3) Purchasing shelf-stable food and bringing it to our center, or letting us know where we can pick it up. Within possibility, please donate food paired for meals, e.g. five packets/boxes of pasta with five jars/cans of pasta sauce; 6 32oz boxes of shelf stable milk with 6 boxes of cereal; small cases of applesauce; five packets of rice with ten cans of beans and so forth.

We thank you for your support and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions. We are all in this together. You can call us at (765) 747-4741, email Jacqueline Hanoman, our Executive Director, at director@rosscentermuncie.org, or come to our center at 1110 W 10th Street, Muncie 47302.
