Our next favorite resource is for early intervention. If you've ever seen one of our SLPs put something on their head and "achoo" it off, they probably got it from Laura Mize. ;)

Her website has good info for parents and therapists!

Teach Me To Talk with Laura Mize: Speech Language products and videos for Late Talkers, Autism, and Apraxia. ASHA CEU courses.

Since our clinic is founded on the desire to empower parents, we want to share some resources that are geared towards families that we personally LOVE!

Up first, The Play Project! This has changed the way we play in therapy and we think it could really change your play at home, too!

You can learn the different levels of play, how to encourage growth in play, and how to join your child's world to increase engagement.

The PLAY Project is a parent implemented, intensive early intervention autism treatment program for young children that is evidence-based.

It is Miss Kristie's 2 year anniversary with Bloom!!! I think we speak for everyone when we say she is an absolute LIGHT in our clinic!!!

Last Stategy!!: 19 Look for the good fit

When considering what activities to do together, make sure you consider your child's sensory needs and ability to participate. If your child is overreactive to sounds and movement, then it would be more helpful to do slow, quiet activities. If a child is defensive to tactile input, then put away the shaving cream and try something else.

(Bonus: We really recommend the book "The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun" to get a good sensory profile of your child with lots of ideas for matching activities!)

Strategy 18: Share Their World

Join your child where they are and support their world. How much would your child love it if you vocalized with them or spun in circles with them? Would they enjoy it if you fell on the crash pad or bounced on the yoga ball, too? What if you added some hot wheels to the cars they've lined up? Shared interaction is SO important and you're more likely to get that if you follow your child's interests.

Strategy 17: Keep on pulling!

Once you get that first circle closed, question answered, idea shared, etc. pull more out!

For example:
"Do you want to go outside?"
"yes!"
"Which boots should we wear?"

(Side note: If asking one more thing pushes your child to frustration then that's a sign that they have had enough and they need a reset. :) )

Strategy 16: +1

Always try to push for one step further. Can we make an interaction last 1 turn longer? Can we engage for 1 extra minute? Can we sit through 1 more page, close one more communication circle, add one more word? etc.

You can't always add one more thing and sometimes you may go back down the ladder, but always model and expect for one step ahead!

Strategy 15: All emotions allowed

Use your whole body to express feelings, positive or negative. No emotions are bad! Exaggerate when you are modeling.

Strategy 14: Get moving!

Sometimes kids need to get their blood pumping to focus. Depending on our children, some have lower arousal levels than others. It can help to begin play by providing vestibular or proprioceptive input (spinning, jumping, etc.).

Strategy 13: You are the best toy in the room!

There are plenty of ways that YOU can be your child's toy! Chase, tickles, singing, finger play, hide and seek, etc. are all great things you can do without needing any extra tools!

18/08/2025

Strategy 12: Use ALL of you that you can!

Pair words you say with a motor action and an excited voice with lots of inflection to give the words more meaning. This gives the child more information to help process and store that word! For example, when saying "go!" you can use a louder, higher pitch and move your arms forward. When modeling "up", you can stretch it out and you raise your pitch while lifting your arms.
