Dr. Herbst, Team Hope in Motion and Faith In Practice returned home last week after another successful orthopedic mission trip to Guatemala. What a blessing it is for this team to use their talents and expertise in this wayāproviding lifeāchanging surgeries to patients who otherwise would not have access to specialized orthopedic care.
Together, the team served 100 patients and completed more than 105 procedures, including 18 hip surgeries, 60 knee surgeries, and 27 foot and ankle procedures. Of those, 10 were clubfoot repairs for children ages 3ā8, including three bilateral cases.

Below, Dr. Herbst shares reflections from this successful trip:
āAfter more than 20 years of mission work, Iām still surprised every single year.
How do 50 peopleāfrom every corner of the country, every walk of life, and every professionācome together and form a team that bonds and works with such unity from the very first moment?
It makes no sense.
In our normal lives, we rely on committees, team-building exercises, and detailed processes just to function efficiently. Often, despite all the effort, we fall short.
But in Guatemala, it simply happens.
105 procedures. 100 patients. 4 days.
How?
Yes, itās the grace of God.
But itās also the undeniable power of a shared purpose. Itās awe-inspiring to watch 50 individuals instantly become integral parts of a well-oiled machine that just gets it done.
What a powerful lesson.
If we could set aside the divides we create in our own country and unite around a common goal, our potential would be limitless.
Iām incredibly grateful to be part of this work each year, and I carry these lessons back with meāto my patients, my team, and my daily practice.ā
