"Why do I still have pain after back surgery? Now I have more pain."
Spine surgeons are usually very bright doctors, and are well-trained. But trying to "fix" a bad spine with surgery is an extraordinarily difficult challenge.

Why do people still have pain after back surgery. The reasons for persistent pain, or in some cases, worse pain, are widely varied.
Some spine surgeries are known to be more successful than other types. Some are called Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeries (MISS). This type of surgery is an attempt to try to remove pressure from a delicate nerve while doing as little damage to the spine as possible.
Other types of spine surgery can be very involved. Fusion surgery, for example, involves cutting through healthy muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue to get to the spine, then cutting pieces of spinal bone, exposing the delicate spinal cord and discs.
Usually surgeons will use metal connectors (rods & plates), and screws to attach to the surgically altered bones to hold them in position. Often bone paste that may be from a cadaver is used as cement to fuse the bones together as it hardens.
🔺 Lumbar (lower back) Fusion surgery is associated with the highest percentage of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome. Studies report anywhere from one third to one half of lumbar fusion surgeries result in continued pain for the patient.
🔺 Lumbar fusion surgery can require up to a year or longer for recovery. It is a painful surgery and risks of pain drug dependence are well known.
🔺 This is apparently the problem Tiger Woods is dealing with - ongoing pain even after 7️⃣ spinal surgeries performed by some of the most sought-after surgeons in the country. It appears that he may be dealing with addiction to the opioid drugs often used for spinal surgery for the intense pain.
