Vanderbilt Eye Institute Tennessee Lions Pediatric Eye Center Murfreesboro We’re in this with you, to help you get the care you need, safely. Everyone wears a mask – patients, visitors, doctors, nurses and staff.

Vanderbilt Health has restarted surgeries, procedures and clinic visits that were paused or delayed. Safety is our top priority, with measures that follow – and in some cases exceed – local, state and CDC public health recommendations. We’re sanitizing rooms between each patient, and cleaning public spaces frequently throughout the day. We’re checking everyone for fever and symptoms before they enter our facilities. We’ve spaced chairs in waiting areas, limited the number who can ride elevators at once and made other changes so we can keep a safe (6 feet) physical distance. If a pregnant woman has syphilis, the infection can be passed to her baby. Syphilis can cause a range of symptoms for the adult, and have a devastating effect on the fetus. Recently there has been an increase in the number of babies born with syphilis.

The good news: A mother’s syphilis can be treated during pregnancy, and new guidelines call for additional screening throughout a pregnancy.

Su***de is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10-14, and the third leading cause for people ages 15-24. Our pediatric emergency department team wants parents to be aware of signs that a teen may be considering self-harm or su***de.

They may: say things about not wanting to be alive, or indicating self-harm; have changed sleeping and eating habits; withdraw from activities they used to like; have trouble with daily functions; give away belongings; act out or run away.

At just 4 months old, Josephine needed surgery to give her brain room to grow.

She was born with Antley-Bixler syndrome, a rare condition that caused part of her skull to fuse too early. Her cheekbones and airway were underdeveloped. Her eye sockets were shallow. Her brain was under pressure.

Her care team at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt included pediatric craniofacial plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Golinko and neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Bonfield. Together, they performed a procedure called a posterior vault distraction to safely expand the back of her skull and ease that pressure.

Since then, she’s had more surgeries to shape the front of her skull and support her airway and spine. And she’s done more than recover.

Today, Josephine is a kindergartner who feeds her chickens, plays Mario Kart with her siblings and dances in the car with her dog, Johnny Cashew.

Craniofacial conditions are complex. Every child’s story is different.

Monica went into labor with her triplets at home at 26 weeks. Despite plans to deliver in Nashville, her husband rushed her 10 minutes from home to Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital, where the boys were delivered. By that night, all three boys had been transferred and were settled in at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

They were so small, two had eyes still fused shut. One needed bowel surgery within hours. Each baby had their own ambulance team. Monica was transferred, too.

When she got to Monroe Carell, Monica didn’t just meet nurses—she met the people who would guide her through more than 100 days in the neonatal intensive care unit.

“We weren’t expecting any of this,” she said. “But they held my hand, they kept the boys together, and they were our lifeline.”

Her oldest son, Carter, had to wait weeks before he could even hold his brothers. Today, he reads to them. Feeds them. Protects them.

The triplets are 2 years old now—growing, hitting milestones and filling their tiny house with noise, toys and joy.

“They still text me to check in,” Monica said about the NICU team. “That’s the part no one tells you—how much they love your babies like you do.”
