Multiple ECMO programs have recently announced their adoption of the Medtronic VitalFlow. Have you seen or used the device? Would love to hear your feedback. Here are a few features I’ve read about:

🔵 Integrated Performance Monitoring with Intuitive Interface
The system uses a large touch-screen display that centralizes real-time performance data from integrated sensors. It also includes high-visibility alarms, a smart RPM k**b, and standard hard keys for quick access

🔵 Configurable, Transportable Design
VitalFlow is designed to work both at the bedside and during intra-hospital transport. It offers modular components (console, caddy, cart) to adapt to different hospital layouts and usage situations

🔵 Advanced Oxygenator (Nautilus) & Centrifugal Pump Technology
The system uses the Nautilus oxygenator with a circular / transverse flow path to reduce areas of low flow or stasis and to lower blood-side pressure drop. The centrifugal pump has low-profile fins and ceramic bearings to reduce heat generation and shear on the blood, improving hemocompatibility.

🔵 Simplified Workflow & Usability
Designed to address clinician feedback, VitalFlow emphasizes simplicity: ease of use by staff with varying experience, streamlined controls, symbols plus numbers in the interface, and features like LED hard keys, indicator light bars visible from 360°, and an emergency hand crank.

🔵 Data Connectivity, Real-Time Streaming, and Upgradability
The system supports exporting data, real-time data streaming to external hospital or ICU systems, and has an architecture that can be upgraded/configured over time. It is also built to integrate with other ECMO circuit components (oxygenators, catheters) from Medtronic.

Since transitioning from bedside ICU nurse to CNS in 2019, Kathie has led the development of Rush’s Adult Critical Care Residency Program, blending evidence-based training with wellness support to prepare and retain new graduate nurses.
