TWO more weeks from today until the New Moms Therapy Groups begin. First of all, let me talk about the NEW name.

As a whole I have taken into consideration the needs of the women I hope this group will serve. They are more than just the first time moms, they are second to 19th time moms of little ones, moms with step kids and new babies, new single moms, newly married new moms, young new moms, older new moms.... and the list goes on. What I have seen, is that while different moms have different backgrounds and different needs, we all have a common thread... at some point and time during this transition into motherhood, we all struggle. At some point in time, in some way, we all face a challenge while raising our children, in relating to others or sometimes just dealing with ourselves. This is not an enjoyable place for anyone to be. So instead of separating groups by where your baby falls in birth order, I have decided to connect you by need.

To start off the month of January, I have decided to have therapy groups (after the initial assessment) for FREE. These initial groups will serve as introduction and postpartum education groups. Initial assessments are held by appointment during the week. From here on during the rest of the year, the therapy groups that are held once a month on Saturday will continue to serve as a FREE introduction groups for those of you who want to gather more information, ask questions and see if a therapy group is the right fit for you. (All groups are still limited in size and will continue to be by appointment only.)

Becoming a parent can be such a wonderful experience… but sometimes “life” can cloud our experience and make it less than what it was designed to be. Let’s come together and clear away those clouds, to find ways to help you have more of the connections that you desire… with others, with your baby, with yourself. Feel free to call or write. You can also see my profile on https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/lavonne-johnson-murfreesboro-tn/152989?rec_next=1&p=5 to gather further information.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope that you will also take the time to consider if this is something that will benefit you and your new family.

Question:
Is group therapy covered by insurance?

Answer: Most managed care companies cover group therapy much the same as individual therapy. If you are planning on using insurance I would encourage you to look into this prior to our meeting to ask about coverage. I am currently in network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna and TriWest. Tricare coverage will begin in 2018, in time for these group sessions.

This morning, I wanted to leave you with a thought, rather than a question and answer (although it might be just the answer you were looking for).

We became mothers and for some, asking for help suddenly became a sign of weakness. What a myth! Or a lie we tell ourselves. What new job do you go into and you don't have questions... or just want to learn? When you get physically sick or hurt, no one expects you to not tend to your wounds. Why should taking care of your heart be any different?

Question/Comment: I feel like everyone is telling me what to do and not do with my baby. I don’t need a group of women giving me advice. Is this what I should expect?

Answer: No. In general people will tell you what to do and how THEY think you should best to do it and while they mean well, that is not the purpose of this group. This group will provide a safe place to share your feelings and experiences as they have presented themselves to you. But what makes this group different is that similar to individual therapy, I will provide coping skills, therapeutic education and other interventions that will support the focus of the session for that day. These focus groups may carry on for more than one session but they will always be led by me as the facilitator.

Question: Every mothers needs are different. How will this group make sure that my needs are not over looked?

Answer: The voice of each mother deserves to be heard. In order to make sure this happens, I will meet with each of you individually first to talk one on one and allow you to tell me directly about some of your personal concerns. In this way, future groups can be tailored to make sure that your concerns are addressed.

***Should you have any other questions, please inbox me directly. I would be more than happy to talk with you before (and after) our groups begin. Look back daily to see if your questions have been answered.***

Well, every group has its pros and cons and I am not here to belittle any of them.
