Recovery starts with determination — and the right support.
Earlier this year, Jim H. sustained a fall while entering an elevator at his community. The fall resulted in significant hip, pelvis, and back pain, leaving him dependent on a wheelchair for mobility when he had previously been fully independent.
When Jim began therapy at Brookdale Wornall Place, he required moderate to maximum assistance for transfers, mobility, and activities of daily living.
The therapy team worked closely with Jim to build a plan focused on restoring strength, mobility, and independence. Starting with gentle strengthening and gradually progressing to functional mobility and ADL training, Jim quickly showed just how motivated he was to get back on his feet.
Within just a few weeks, Jim progressed to walking over 150 feet with a front-wheeled walker, improving bed mobility, and safely completing transfers with minimal assistance.
His progress didn’t stop there.
Jim eventually transitioned from a walker to a single-point cane, increased his walking distance to over 300–500 feet, and can now move freely throughout his community again.
One of his biggest accomplishments?
Climbing the grand staircase in the Brookdale Wornall lobby without stopping using his cane.
Today, Jim reports his pain has decreased significantly, often reaching 0/10, and he continues to stay active and independent.
We’re incredibly proud of Jim’s hard work and grateful for the opportunity to support his journey.
