All behavior is a form of communication.

There’s this idea about autistic behavior that I’ve only ever heard talked about in ABA therapy…and it’s that autistic people sometimes engage in challenging behaviors because they NEED them.

➡️ Self injury, screaming, hitting, dropping to the floor…they rely on behaviors like that for three reasons.

1. They genuinely don’t have the ability to get the need met in any other way, meaning behavior is the only thing they have.
▪️EXAMPLE: An autistic child is handed a red cup but wanted a blue one, so they scream because they don’t have the communication skills to ask for the right color.

2. Our requests get ignored because people underestimate the significance of the need
▪️EXAMPLE: An autistic adult wears a wool sweater that feels unbearably itchy. They tell a friend, but the friend says, “You’ll get used to it,” not realizing how overwhelming it truly is. As a result, they take off the sweater, rip it, and refuse to select another top.

3. We’ve depleted our tolerance and hit the limit of what we can handle.

Even as an autistic therapist, thats the one that gets me.
I have communication skills, I have problem solving skills, I have social skills…but when I hit my limit…I can’t access that part of my brain.

As it relates to “problem behavior”, autistic people aren’t giving you a hard time, we’re having a hard time. It isn’t a choice, without having certain abilities or support…behavior is the only thing left. 😔❤️‍🩹

This is one of the MANY reasons that autism IS a disability.
