What Is the Flu?
The term "flu" is a catch-all for upper respiratory infections and is sometimes used to describe gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. Technically, the flu is an influenza infection, caused by the influenza virus A, B, or C. People who have the flu can be infected by one or more of the three viruses.

Is a Sore Throat Serious?
Whether or not a sore throat is serious depends on what's causing it and what the symptoms are. Hoarseness, difficulty swallowing and a sensation of scratchiness in the throat could be the result of allergies or air pollution. If these symptoms are accompanied by swelling, sores or pus in the tonsils, a high fever, body aches, and headaches, or nausea and vomiting, it could be signs of tonsillitis, a serious infection, or strep throat.

When Do I Need Urgent Care?
It's important to recognize a slight exacerbation (increased shortness of breath, more coughing and wheezing). If the symptoms don't respond to inhaled medications, an urgent care visit is a good idea. However, if the patient is too short of breath to speak or fingernails and lips are blue, immediate emergency care is needed. An exacerbation of these symptoms can be life-threatening and should be treated in an emergency room.
