Lesson 2 of the Pilgrims Path curriculum focuses on something many people never stop to consider:

Your life follows what you believe.

Addiction is not only fueled by substances; it is often fueled by lies:
“I need this to cope.”
“I can’t change.”
“My past defines me.”
“One more time won’t matter.”
“Pleasure now is better than obedience later.”

But Scripture teaches that freedom begins when the mind is renewed by truth.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”
— Romans 12:2

In Lesson 2, participants learn:
• How beliefs shape behavior
• Why worldview matters in recovery
• How false beliefs keep people in bo***ge
• Why God’s Word must become our standard
• How truth renews the mind and reshapes life

A pilgrim cannot walk safely while believing lies.

This lesson challenges participants to stop taking direction from the flesh, emotions, old voices, and destructive patterns; and instead learn to walk according to the truth of God’s Word.

Recovery is not just behavior modification. It is learning to think rightly, worship rightly, and walk faithfully toward Christ.

🧭 QUESTION FOR YOU:

What is one lie that addiction, sin, or the world told you… that Scripture later exposed as false?

Lesson 2 of the Pilgrims Path curriculum focuses on beliefs, truth, worldview, and the renewing of the mind through God’s Word. A man’s addiction is not just tied to actions; it is tied to what he believes about God, himself, sin, comfort, and truth.

The enemy loves lies because chains are easier to keep on blind men. But Jesus said:

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32

You are not alone.

Last night at Pilgrims Path Bible Study we walked verse by verse through Romans chapter 2, and one thing became painfully clear: religion without true repentance is dangerous.

Paul confronts the person who points fingers at everyone else while excusing their own sin. It’s easy to look at addiction, brokenness, sexual sin, pride, anger, greed, or rebellion in someone else and say “they need help,” while ignoring the condition of our own heart. Romans 2 reminds us that God sees beyond appearances. He judges rightly, fairly, and truthfully.

We talked about how morality alone cannot save anyone. Church attendance cannot save anyone. Knowing Scripture intellectually cannot save anyone. Even outward behavior changes are not enough if the heart has never truly been changed by Christ.

One discussion point that stood out was this: many people want the benefits of God without surrendering to God. We want peace without repentance. Freedom without obedience. Grace without truth. But Romans 2 reminds us that God’s kindness is meant to lead us to repentance, not comfort us in continuing sin.

We also discussed how easy it is to create a “respectable” version of sin. Some addictions are public. Others wear suits, sit in pews, and look polished on the outside. Romans 2 levels the playing field. Every one of us stands guilty before a holy God apart from Jesus Christ.

The good news is that the Gospel does not leave us there.

Christ came to save sinners…not polished people pretending they have it together.

Thankful for everyone who came out Sunday night. Join us next week as we continue through Romans together.

Join us this Sunday at 6PM as we continue our study through the book of Romans and begin Chapter 2.

Romans 2 shifts the focus from the obvious sins we often see in others… to the sin and hypocrisy within our own hearts. Paul reminds us that outward morality, religious appearance, and judging others cannot save us. We all stand guilty before a holy God and desperately in need of His grace.

This is one of the most direct and humbling chapters in Scripture…and one our culture desperately needs to hear.

Whether you’ve been walking with Christ for years, are struggling with addiction, carrying questions, or simply looking for truth, you are welcome here.

Lesson 1 of the Pilgrims Path curriculum begins with a hard truth many people already know deep down:

Addiction promises freedom… but delivers bo***ge.

Using the powerful imagery of Christian carrying his burden in Pilgrim’s Progress, this lesson helps participants understand that addiction is more than a bad habit; it’s often the visible evidence of deeper spiritual slavery. Shame, guilt, broken relationships, hopelessness, and the constant cycle of “I’ll quit tomorrow” are burdens many carry every day.

But the Gospel offers something the world cannot: True freedom through Jesus Christ.

“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36

Lesson 1 walks participants through:
• The biblical concept of slavery to sin
• Why willpower alone isn’t enough
• The false promises addiction makes
• The freedom Christ offers
• Beginning the journey toward lasting transformation

Recovery is not just about getting clean. It’s about becoming new.

The world talks a lot about “freedom,” but most of the time it just means doing whatever feels right in the moment.

Biblical freedom is different.

Freedom is no longer being enslaved to sin. Freedom is peace with God. Freedom is waking up without chains controlling your life. Freedom is learning obedience, truth, responsibility, and purpose through Christ.

For many people, freedom isn’t flashy. Sometimes it looks like sobriety. Sometimes it looks like reconciliation. Sometimes it looks like finally having peace and a clear mind after years of chaos.

What does freedom actually look like to you?

We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
