Halloween is coming up! Here are some tips that could be helpful for foster parents ⤵️
1. Be mindful of potential triggers, such as scary decorations or loud sounds. These could make the evening more stressful than fun for some kids. 🧟
2. Offer costume choices to make them feel in control. Let them pick non-scary costumes if they choose, familiar costumes—or no costume at all if that’s what they prefer! 👻
3. Bring headphones to help with sensory overwhelm. Crowded streets and loud noises can be overwhelming for some children—headphones provide a calming break! 🎧
4. Incorporate the child’s cultural or religious traditions to make the holiday feel more familiar and special for them 🧡
5. Bring a wagon or stroller for breaks. Trick-or-treating can be tiring, and giving kids the option to rest helps them enjoy the night! 🎃
6. Plan ahead so the child knows what to expect. Knowing the schedule helps reduce anxiety and makes the night feel more predictable and safe! 🕯️
7. Consider allergies and offer alternatives for trick-or-treating! Not every child may feel comfortable & could change their mind, so be prepared for plans to change! 🧡
