This Black History Month, UHIN proudly honors Dr. James McCune Smith, the first Black American to earn a medical degree. He graduated from the University of Glasgow in Scotland when U.S. institutions barred him due to segregation. But his accomplishments didnโt stop there. He went on to become the first Black physician to publish in U.S. medical journals and to open and operate his own pharmacy, serving his community with groundbreaking care and insight.
Dr. Smith recognized the power of data, using medical and census statistics to challenge misinformation and advocate for the health and well-being of marginalized communities. His commitment to truth and access remains an inspiration today.
At UHIN, we share Dr. Smith's belief in using healthcare data to create clarity and drive better outcomes for all. We are reminded this month - and every month - that innovation and inclusion go hand in hand.
