This Black History Month, UHIN proudly honors Dr. James McCune Smith, the first Black American to earn a medical degree. He graduated from the University of Glasgow in Scotland when U.S. institutions barred him due to segregation. But his accomplishments didnโ€™t stop there. He went on to become the first Black physician to publish in U.S. medical journals and to open and operate his own pharmacy, serving his community with groundbreaking care and insight.

Dr. Smith recognized the power of data, using medical and census statistics to challenge misinformation and advocate for the health and well-being of marginalized communities. His commitment to truth and access remains an inspiration today.

At UHIN, we share Dr. Smith's belief in using healthcare data to create clarity and drive better outcomes for all. We are reminded this month - and every month - that innovation and inclusion go hand in hand.

Are you an EDI Champion?

Leaders in healthcare electronic data interchange (EDI) must pursue peak performance in claim management and data excellence, akin to athletes pushing to win at the highest levels.

For more than a decade, Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) have worked on interoperability as a crucial element to improving patient care, reducing medical errors, and reducing avoidable procedures and unnecessary rework.

The Information Blocking Rule (IBR), a part of the 21st Century Cures Act, aims to prevent healthcare providers and other entities from hindering interoperability or the exchange of electronic health information (EHI). This rule prohibits actions that intentionally restrict or interfere with the access, exchange, or use of electronic health information, promoting a more interconnected healthcare ecosystem.

By fostering interoperability, IBR empowers patients and healthcare providers to access and share health information efficiently, leading to better-coordinated care and improved health outcomes.

Keep reading our most recent blog post to learn about IBR compliance, and the benefits of the Rule, including improved patient care through better access to their health information, reduced medical errors due to more complete and accurate data, and enhanced coordination among healthcare providers.

Information blocking rule compliance is important. HIEs play an important role to help support the secure sharing, accessing of EHI.
