🌟 In honor of , we acknowledge the strength and resilience of those living with chronic diseases. A chronic disease lasts longer than a year and affects 7 out of 10 people in the U.S. Many of those needing a corneal transplant also suffer from a chronic disease. Let's spread awareness and support each other. Together, we can make a difference! 💪

In 1925, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become "Knights of the Blind," a call to action that influenced the creation of eye banks, including the Utah Lions Eye Bank. We proudly continue her mission to bring vision and hope to those in need. 👁️✨

What an amazing year! We are grateful to all donor families, recipients, staff, surgeons, and researchers who helped make this possible!

Last month, we released the 2023 Eye Banking Statistical Report. This annual publication is the world's most comprehensive examination of eye banking processes and trends.

This graphic represents some of the highlights in the 2023 data - most notably that the number of donors and total corneas donated has returned to pre-COVID levels!

While the numbers are impressive, it's impossible to calculate the true intangible value of lives transformed by the restoration of sight.

As we close out Eye Donation Month we are thankful for the opportunity to share the gift of sight with someone in need of a transplant!

An almost graduate from nursing school, Jena (24) felt strongly about being a donor. She was adamant that her family knew this was her wish and campaigned for others to also become donors. Driving back to school in Utah after spending Christmas 2022 in Arizona with her family, Jena hit black ice in the Spanish Fork Canyon, and slid into oncoming traffic. She died immediately. Even amidst the horror of this loss, her parents reached out to be sure her donation request would be honored. Due to the significance of her accident, Jena's family felt another loss when they heard Jena’s organs were not in the condition needed for donation. Later, Jena's family got the news that her corneas were able to be used. This brought a little comfort to her parents and five younger siblings. Her parents stated, “we hope someone, somewhere will have improved vision and life because of our daughter’s cornea and big heart”.

Veteran ULEB donors include Utah's Gail Halvorsen, known worldwide as the "Candy Bomber" pilot of World War II's Berlin Airlift. "My Father focused on helping others during his life and he realized donating eye tissue was another way to continue to do that, even in death, said Halvorsen’s daughter, Denise Williams.

“Whatever a donor’s age and whatever the quality of their vision, each and every donation to research makes a difference in our efforts to translate scientific discoveries into treatments for blinding eye diseases,” says Gregory S. Hageman, PhD, director of the SCTM. “Without donations to research, we would not have made such rapid progress toward a gene therapy about ready to go into clinical trials to treat a prevalent form of AMD,” Hageman says.
“Colonel Halvorsen did incredible things with his life. He gave and gave, and then when he passed away, he gave once again. We could not be more honored that he chose to donate to the ULEB and SCTM.”

World Keratoconus Day is observed on November 10 every year. Barbara Wesley has Keratoconus and relies on her vision to create her finely detailed glass art pieces. Keratoconus causes the cornea to become thin and develop a cone-like bulge. "By the time I was 40, my vision had gotten really bad," Barb says, "I saw double and everything was blurry. I was fortunate enough to get a transplant from Dr. Olson at the Moran. It changed my life. I remember driving home from the university and I saw trees on the mountains - it was amazing and I am forever grateful."
