Q: How do you treat PAD?

Dr. Fankhauser: Treatment options vary from noninvasive walking and exercise programs to procedures we can do in the office.

In these procedures, we make a tiny poke-hole into the artery and, through it, are able to take detailed X-rays to visualize the blood flow and blockages. Then through that same small poke-hole, we can treat those blockages with techniques using balloons or devices that break down and remove the plaque.

What does an interventional radiologist do?

An interventional radiologist uses image guidance and catheters, which are long, thin, flexible tubes that travel into arteries and veins, to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions without incisions or stitches.

“We have the ability to access and often treat almost every organ system in the body with minimally invasive techniques. Through a tiny nick in the skin, we can treat peripheral artery disease, enlarged prostates, damaged veins, uterine fibroids, and compression fractures of the spine, just to name a few,” explains Dr. Joel Rainwater, MD, chief medical officer of CiC. “Our minimally invasive approach provides excellent outcomes, less risk, a shorter recovery time, and little or no pain compared to traditional surgery.”

Working from home increases your risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) because you go straight from your bed to your desk and settle in without much walking.

DVT is when blood clots form in the larger veins in your legs. DVT becomes life-threatening when the clot breaks free and travels through your bloodstream. When it reaches your pulmonary arteries, it forms a pulmonary embolism (PE), preventing the blood from flowing properly through your lungs. This decreases the amount of oxygen absorbed and delivered to your body, which is life-threatening.

Dr. Braxton says, “Stand up, stretch and walk around a bit to get your blood flowing.” If you need a little nudge to get up, set an alarm every hour as a reminder.

If you're thirsty, you've waited too long!

Thirst is a sign of dehydration, which means your body doesn’t have enough fluids to function properly.

To prevent dehydration, you should drink water regularly throughout the day, especially before you feel thirsty. You should also drink more water when you exercise, when you’re sick, or when you’re in a hot environment.

If you have excessive thirst that doesn’t go away with drinking water, you should see your doctor for a check-up.

Poor circulation can cause nerve and tissue damage, blood clots, and plaque buildup in your arteries. Ignoring the symptoms can lead to serious health problems and increase your risk for heart attack and stroke. Lifestyle changes, medication and minimally invasive procedures are treatments that can help.

Signs of poor circulation are:
1. Numbness and tingling in the hands and/or feet
2. Muscle cramps or pain, especially in the legs
3. Varicose veins
4. Swelling in the arms or legs
5. Cold hands and/or feet
6. Discolored skin on your legs
7. Sores that heal slowly or not at all

Q: How can treatment for PAD change a patient's life?

Dr. Fankhauser: The beauty of improving circulation is that results are apparent very quickly. People can feel the difference with less pain, less fatigue, and some say they even more energy.

People don’t realize how suffering with PAD can mentally wear them down, and almost cause depression. Getting relief is like lifting a weight off someone’s shoulders. They feel better mentally and physically and get back to enjoying things they had been avoiding. It’s really rewarding to help people like that.

Why don't some wounds heal?

Sores often don't get better because they don’t have the oxygen and key nutrients they need for healing. Blood delivers those critical factors throughout the body. If you have poor circulation, you might not have enough blood flow to provide the antibiotics, oxygen and nutrition required for proper healing.

Dr. Rainwater and the endovascular specialists at CiC use tiny tools and real-time imaging to access the blocked peripheral arteries, clear plaque away, and improve blood flow. “Establishing blood flow reestablishes the oxygen and nutrient supply so healing can begin,” says Dr. Rainwater. “Establishing blood flow reestablishes the oxygen and nutrient supply so healing can begin."

If you have a non-healing wound, get your circulation checked.

WHAM! It's Wound Healing Awareness Month

ABWM Foundation has identified June as a time to spread awareness about the importance of wound care and prevention. Millions of Americans are living with chronic wounds, including many who are living with diabetic foot ulcers. Without proper treatment, non-healing wounds or sores can lead to infection, hospitalization, and possible amputation.

🌞Don't forget the sunscreen!

Using sunscreen to protect against harmful UV rays that can cause sunburn, early aging and skin cancer should be a year-round exercise for everyone.

If you're using it every day you shouldn't have a problem with your lotion expiring, but it can. According to the FDA, sunscreen has a shelf life of 3 years. Don't take a chance if your sunscreen bottle has no expiration date and can't remember when you bought it. Toss it and buy a new bottle with a high SPF rating.

Slather it on before you go outside, and reapply often! Keep in mind, sunscreen alone isn’t enough to keep you safe in the sun. Do your best to limit your time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.

Keep those roadways open!

If you laid all of the blood vessels in your body out in a line, they would cover close to 100,000 miles. These vessels are part of the circulatory system, which transports oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to every part of your body. If the roadway is blocked, oxygen and nutrients can’t get to cells causing them to die.

What blocks the path? PAD (peripheral artery disease). PAD is a build-up of fatty material inside the arteries which limits the amount of blood that passes through them. Over time it hardens into plaque inside the artery.

The specialists at CiC diagnose and treat PAD at their centers. They are able to go into the bloodstream through a tiny nick in the skin to see if there is plaque. Dr. Rainwater explains, “Using image guidance and a catheter, that’s a thin, flexible tube that travels through the bloodstream, we can see if there is a blockage and then remove it with special instruments. Once the plaque is removed, blood flow improves.”
