With back-to-school on the horizon, it's a good idea to start helping your kids transition back to their school schedules. Start early, be consistent, and give your kids at least 2 weeks before school starts so they (& you) have enough time to adjust. Here are some tips:

๐ŸŒž Adjust wake-up times in the morning by 10-15 minutes earlier every few days. This helps kids' bodies adjust gradually & more naturally.

๐ŸŒ™ Shift bedtime earlier by 10-15 minutes every few nights as well. Combined with waking up earlier, they should be tired sooner.

๐Ÿ“– Re-establish bedtime routines. Bath time, book time, or quiet time before bed helps create a relaxing and predictable routine to signal to your child's body that it's time to sleep.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Limit screen time. Turn off TV, phones, tablets at least 1 hour before bedtime. Blue light emitted from devices can interfere with sleep.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Optimize their sleep environment. Dark, quiet, and cool bedrooms lead to more restful sleep.

Let's Talk Going to College With ADHD! Do you have a teen with ADHD who is starting or returning to college this fall? College is a time for kids to try out independence, and you can help set them up for success by sharing these 7 tips!

Remember, if your teen is taking medications, part of being independent means being responsible for managing their own meds. This includes talking to you or a doctor if their current medication isn't fitting their needs as well as understanding the dangers of sharing or mixing medications.

Talk to your pediatrician if you have questions! Link in bio for more advice for parents.

Hi, it's Cassi, registered nurse & Child Passenger Safety Technician, with another car seat tip! Rear-facing car seats are the safest position not just for infants, but for toddlers too. Even though it may be tempting to switch at age 2, it is recommended to keep your child rear-facing until well AFTER age 2 and over 30 pounds. Here's why:

โœ… In a crash, a rear-facing car seat absorbs the impact forces, protecting your childโ€™s developing head, neck, and spine by cradling their entire body.

๐Ÿšซ When forward-facing, the crash forces are directed into the harness and your childโ€™s body, which increases the risk of serious injury, especially to the neck and spine.

โš ๏ธ Keep your child rear-facing beyond age 2 until they reach the height OR weight limit set by the car seat manufacturer. Most car seats allow rear-facing well beyond 2 years!

Worried about leg injuries?๐Ÿฆต Itโ€™s a common concern, but leg injuries in rear-facing seats are extremely rare. Children are flexible and can comfortably cross or prop their legs. More importantly, itโ€™s much safer than risking head or spinal injuries in a crash.

Bottom line: Rear-facing = best protection. Keeping your child rear-facing as long as their seat allows could save their life!

Stay tuned for more tips! Or read our full blog for more - link in bio.

Summer should be full of splashes, not earaches! If your child complains of ear pain after swimming, it might be swimmerโ€™s earโ€”an infection in the outer ear canal caused by water getting trapped and bacteria growing inside.

Symptoms may include:
๐Ÿ‘‚ Itching or redness
๐Ÿ˜– Pain when touching the ear
๐Ÿ’ง Drainage from the ear
๐Ÿ‘‚ Muffled hearing

If your child has symptoms of swimmer's ear, call our office to schedule an appointment! Swimmer's ear is treatable with prescription ear drops. For prevention tips & more about swimmer's ear, read our full blog by Morgan Leaventon, FNP-C, at our Summit location. Link in bio.

Measles spreads faster than any other infectious disease, which is why it's often the first to reappear when vaccination rates drop. It's highly contagious because it can spread from person to person, through the air with a cough or sneeze โ€” and a person can spread it before they know they are sick.

With measles cases on the rise in Utah, it's important to make sure your child is vaccinated and to know the signs. Symptoms start 7-14 days (up to 3 weeks) after exposure. Kids usually develop cold symptoms that get worse in the first 3 days before developing a rash. Here's what to watch for:

๐Ÿค’ High fever, 104+
๐Ÿ˜ด Fatigue or fussiness
๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ’จ Cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes
๐Ÿ˜ท White spots inside the cheeks (Koplik spots)
๐Ÿ”ด A red, blotchy rash that starts 3-5 days later on the face and spreads to the body

If your child has symptoms or has been exposed, contact your pediatrician right away. Vaccination is the best way to prevent and protect your child & family!

Fireworks are funโ€”but safety comes first! Here are some tips:

๐Ÿ’ฅ Never let kids handle fireworks. Even sparklers burn at over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit - they may seem harmless, but can cause 3rd degree burns.

๐Ÿ‘€ Watch from a distance & set up a safe viewing zone away from where fireworks are being lit.

๐Ÿ’ง Have water nearby just in case.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Wave glow sticks, flags, or streamers instead of sparklers.

๐ŸŽ† View a professional fireworks show from a safe distance or a drone show.

๐Ÿ‘‚ Protect those ears. Loud booms can be scary and even harmful - use noise-reducing earmuffs for young ears.

Celebrate safely! โค๏ธ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™
