Does your face start itching the moment the blossoms appear? You aren't imagining it. While we usually associate seasonal allergies with sneezing and watery eyes, your skin is often on the front lines of the pollen war--especially the skin on your face, since it's typically thinner and more exposed that the rest of your body.

Let's talk chapped lips. While it might seem like a minor annoyance, your lips are actually trying to tell you something important about your skin barrier. At University of Utah Health, we want to help you keep your smile healthy and hydrated. Here is the breakdown on why your lips get chapped and when it’s time to stop DIY-ing and start dialing a pro.

It’s not just in your head (or your nose). When plants release pollen, those microscopic particles are not only inhaled, but can land directly on your skin, triggering an immune response that can cause itching and discomfort in areas other than your sinuses. The good news? Both our allergy and dermatology teams are here to help you navigate the season. Call us today to schedule an appointment.

While we love a good hydration habit here at University of Utah Health, the science behind glowing skin is a bit more nuanced than just hitting your water goal. In fact, healthy skin is less about how much you drink and more about how well your skin retains moisture. Cold air, hot showers, harsh soaps, and harmful skin conditions can strip your skin of its defenses, continually letting out the moisture your body needs. The fix: Trap the water you already have by moisturizing within three minutes of hopping out of the shower. Focus on using sunscreen daily, gentle cleansing, and a simple, consistent routine to strengthen your skin and help it do its number one job: protecting you!

Spring is in the air! The snow is melting, the humidity level is shifting, and your skin is definitely ready to shed its winter coat.
At University of Utah Health, we know that Utah’s "shoulder seasons" can be unpredictable, but your skin care doesn't have to be. Here's how to pivot your routine to ensure your skin puts its best face forward during the transition.

Does that red-light LED mask in your social feed actually work, or is it just expensive décor? At-home LED masks have shown in some studies to be a helpful tool for maintaining skin health, reducing mild acne, and softening fine lines over time, but they don't work for everyone, and can even cause problems for some people. The bottom line is that they are not a replacement for professional clinical treatments or a solid SPF routine, so take our advice: talk to a dermatologist before you plug in to the hype.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), it's normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. If you’re seeing significantly more than that, it might be "telogen effluvium"—a temporary shedding often triggered by a major life stressor.

If you're seeing a lot of breakage, your hair is likely experiencing its own stress. Try reducing heat, using a wide-tooth comb, and skipping tight ponytails to give your hair a break.

Still concerned about thinning? If you notice patchy loss or redness on your scalp, it might be time to see a professional.
