Dr. Brian Lim's research on Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) was recently published in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (GIE). 📄🔬

The study found that patients treated with EMR had significantly lower mortality and healthcare utilization compared to surgery. EMR is now the standard of care for eligible colonic lesions. Congratulations on this achievement, Dr. Lim! 👏

Your Game Plan to Tackle Diabetes!

Diabetes is a condition that affects your blood sugar levels which may be higher than normal. Sugar is the primary fuel for your cells, and insulin (produced in the pancreas) is the hormone that allows cells to use sugar as energy. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), known as insulin-dependent DM, is a condition that occurs because the pancreas will no longer make insulin. In T1DM, taking insulin treatment is necessary to replace what your body can no longer produce. In Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), your pancreas is still able to make some insulin, but your body is resistant to the insulin and cannot regulate blood sugar normally.

The good news is that there are many ways to increase your body's ability to regulate blood sugar in T2DM, and these include the following:

Dietary changes are your DM game plan's first and most critical components. It is important to reduce your portions of carbohydrates, which turn into sugar. Did you know that when you eat your carbohydrates during your meal is also essential? Studies show that eating the carbohydrate portion of your meal after eating the protein/fat components will cause fewer blood sugar spikes than eating the carbohydrates first.

Lifestyle changes to reduce idle time and increase movement are also very effective for lowering blood sugar. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week. Physical activity is not limited to exercise at the gym. There are many forms of exercise, such as household chores, yard work, gardening, and even committing to parking at a distance to increase the amount of walking to your destination.

Weight loss! Did you know that some patients can achieve remission of their Diabetes with weight loss? Besides diet and lifestyle changes, there are several classes of diabetic medications that not only help regulate your blood sugar but can also help you lose up to 20% of your weight. These are potential game changers for many people.

Did you know that Botox® can be used for more than treating wrinkles?

Botox® is an FDA-approved treatment for adults who suffer from chronic migraines.
