Now Offering SPEAK OUT!® Therapy at ESSMC Penn Hills!

Changes in voice, speech, and swallowing can occur at any stage for people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), making communication challenging and even posing safety risks.

Common issues include:
-Quiet or weak voice
-Breathy or hoarse quality
-Slurred words
-Reduced facial expressions
-Monotone pitch
-Coughing or choking when eating/drinking
-Difficulty swallowing pills
-Slowness eating
-Weight loss
-Drooling

Research shows up to 90% of people with Parkinson Disease (PD) develop speech deficits, and more than 80% experience difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). These challenges can significantly impact quality of life.

The SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program, created by the Parkinson Voice Project®, is designed to help individuals with PD and related disorders regain and retain their speech and swallowing abilities.

ESSMC in Penn Hills is excited to announce that the SPEAK OUT!® Therapy Program is now available through our speech-language pathology department.
