Your temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is a collection of bones, muscles, and disc tissue that (normally) work together to allow painless freedom of movement in the jaw. Sometimes this system may be thrown out of whack and that’s when the discomfort of TMJ really begins.
Fortunately chiropractic care can help.
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder is a condition affecting the temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles. The temporomandibular joint is the spot where the temporal bone in the skull connects to the mandible, or jaw bone. A disc made of cartilage acts as a cushion to separate the bones and help them glide smoothly.
Because you have one of these joints on each side of your jaw, TMJ can affect one or both sides and make daily life difficult.
Symptoms of TMJ can vary from person to person. Some of the most common TMJ symptoms include:
- Jaw pain
- Neck pain
- Earaches
- Pain when chewing
- Headaches and migraines
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- Clicking or popping in the jaw
- Soreness or tenderness in the jaw muscles
What causes TMJ? TMJ pain is caused when either the disc or the jaw bone is pulled from its regular position. This can sometimes occur when the surrounding muscles become too tight and place excessive strain on your jaw.
How can chiropractic care help with TMJ? Our goal is to alleviate pain and improve function in the jaw and surrounding muscles. This is done by using manual adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and exercises to help realign the jaw, reduce muscle tension, and improve flexibility.
Chiropractors may also focus on the cervical spine as well as the upper back and shoulders, as these areas are closely related to jaw function and can affect it. By addressing any misalignments or restrictions in these areas, chiropractors can help reduce tension and improve mobility in the jaw.
