Medications & Heat Intolerance — Part 2
Some prescriptions can make it harder for your body to handle the heat — and it’s not just blood pressure meds. In Part 2 of our series, here are more types of medications to be mindful of as summer temperatures rise:
• Antihistamines (commonly used for allergies)
• Antipsychotics (used for mental health conditions)
• Stimulants (often prescribed for ADHD)
• Sedatives and tranquilizers
• Anticholinergics (used for bladder issues, Parkinson’s, or stomach conditions)
These medications can affect how your body cools itself, increase your core temperature, or reduce awareness of dehydration and overheating.
Tips to stay safe:
Drink water regularly
Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat
Wear light, breathable clothing
Talk with a pharmacist if you’re unsure how your meds may be affecting you
