Hot take: if your dog needs multiple tools in order to handle waiting in line to compete and you spend the entire day being miserable then maybe, just maybe, you should re-evaluate some things…

Your dog can absolutely still enjoy a sport without ever having to trial/compete. And I’m not saying having a dog that barks and is excited is a bad thing - all of mine do! But I don’t put them into highly stressful situations without first making sure they can handle the excitement and not pose a risk to others. Barrett waits (mostly calmly) in line for dock diving (his favorite sport) because he has a strong reinforcement history of being rewarded for this behavior. When we stop focusing on the “bad behavior” and start rewarding the “good behavior” ✨magical things happen✨ - kind but not really and that’s on learning theory.

But what do I know 🤷🏻‍♀️

CAUSEY’S SMOKIN GUN SCN TKN
aka Gunner Causey ❤️

Today is more than just a little appreciation post for my house hippo, it’s also an opportunity for me to talk about his namesake.

10 years ago today I lost my childhood best friend in a boating accident, we were both 17 years told. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about him or miss him.

Gunner was found under a truck all alone by a Good Samaritan. My best friends dad too him in at 4 weeks old and raised him until he came to me at 7 weeks old. He was already named Gunner, a name that my best friend would have approved of, and to honor both him and his family I made his “middle name” Causey. When it came time to register him through the AKC Canine Partners program for us to compete in dog sports I knew I wanted a name that honored Jacob’s memory. He loved hunting, fishing, and could talk about fi****ms all day long - and that’s what I had in mind when I picked his registered name.

I think he would have loved Gunner and I’m so thankful that he came to me when he did. He carries with him the memory of a wonderful person who touched the hearts of so many and that’s just one of the ways he is so special to me.

In loving memory of Jacob Perry-Lee Causey ❤️

BEEEEEAAANNNNNN!

So proud of the baby dog and how we continue to go together as a team. This was his second time jumping on a mobile dock at a big event with spectators and he gained a 2 ft average compared to our last event with a best jump of 17’5”. 👏🏻 We also gave Speed Retrieve a try coming in at 7.688 seconds! No luck in placements but it was a big event with lots of other very competitive dogs and he handled himself like a pro. ❤️

Dock diving is truly his favorite sport and I am so lucky to be his handler, I love you Barrett Bean ❤️

Thank you to .dockdogs for such a great event! This was our first Battleship Splash and it’s safe to say we will be back again next year! 🤞🏻

Sometimes we make mistakes as handlers but I’m so proud of Re*****on for working through this problem and still completing a beautiful search!

One of my goals is to get better at documenting our sports journey so I hope y’all enjoy these types of videos and don’t mind my awful voice over 🤣

It’s hard not to get a little emotional about the dog who started it all ❤️

Not only has Re*****on brought my life so much joy, he’s the reason I found my best friends, the reason I started dog sports, and ultimately the dog that changed my entire life. The end of this year will mark 10 years of him by my side and I can only hope and wish for so many more.

Forever grateful to for capturing these sweet moments of us at our last scent work trial (last 3 photos), these are memories I will cherish for a lifetime ❤️

What a weekend!

On Saturday Re*****on and I got to play some Scent Work at the Scent Work Trial. He finished his SIN title in trial 1 and also picked up our first Q in Advanced Exteriors. He brought home a 1st placement in Novice B Interiors and our second Q for Advanced Exteriors in trial 2. We NQ’ed both buried runs which just means we have more training to do. Admittedly buried is the element we practice the least but this was a great learning opportunity for both of us. Overall he went 4/6 in a very HOT and BUSY trial environment which makes me SO proud! ❤️

Sunday brought my very first conformation show! I stewarded for Rally at the Myrtle Beach Kennel Club show and got to watch some truly amazing dogs in both rally and conformation. Barrett was an unexpected tag along but he handled himself absolutely beautifully being crated ringside and walking around such a busy show. I am so impressed with how he is maturing and his ability to adapt and excel at just about anything I ask him to do. Good boy Bean!

We are now home and resting. Back to work tomorrow!

Just a beautiful boy on this beautiful Tuesday 😍

I scheduled some true time off for me and the boys this morning and decided to see my training clients later in the day. While I am so beyond grateful for the growth of my small business these past few months, I have missed getting to spend more time doing something fun with my dogs.

This weekend is going to be loaded with lots of fun things too! Re*****on and I have our second scent work trial of the year on Saturday and then Sunday I will be volunteering at my kennel clubs annual confirmation show in Lumberton! I am super excited because this will be the first confirmation show I have ever attended in person.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week so far!

First scent work trial of 2026 was a huge success! 🎉

Re*****on went 1/1 with his first ever Novice Buried Q!

Gunner qualified in both trial 1 and 2 for Novice Containers earning him his title and bringing home a 🥉 placement for trial 1! We NQ’ed our Buried run today but admittedly that is the element we’ve played with the least so I can’t complain.
Pending AKC approval:
Causey’s Smokin Gun ✨SCN✨ TKN

Thank you to the Upstate South Carolina Scent Work Club, volunteers, and judges for an awesome trial.

So proud of these two who gave their all this weekend despite minimal prep/practice on my part. They truly are rockstars! 🤩

We are alive over here! 👋🏻

A LOT has been going on since the first of the year so I’ll try to get everyone caught up.

- I finished my certification with and launched my training business 🎉
- Re*****on had a small growth removed (picture of the drink boi) which I was pretty concerned about but luckily it came back as a small fibrovascular proliferation. Basically, he probably got poked or nicked by something and then his body walled it off. Nothing to worry about an we are back to our regularly scheduled program.
- Barrett and I have been attending a Sport Foundations Puppy Class to help us work through the terrible teens and we’ve been having so much fun!
- Gunner is currently finishing a round of antibiotics after some very strange urinary incontinence. Hopefully we’ve solved that but we will see.
- Wedding planning is still in full swing and I am forever grateful for my two besties .hero.dogs and for helping to keep me sane and being so supportive during this process and all of the other things they constantly lend a listening ear for ❤️

I am hoping that we start to settle down relatively soon as we find our new groove and I settle more into my training business. I am super excited for all of the good things to come this year, a blessing when the world feels so heavy. I haven’t had a lot of extra spoons lately but know that I am here ❤️
